Win Griffiths
Winston James Griffiths, OBE (born 11 February 1943), known as Win Griffiths, is a former teacher and politician, who served as a Member of the European Parliament for South Wales from 1979 to 1989 and as member of parliament for Bridgend from 1987 to 2005 for the Labour Party. He held a number of front bench roles in opposition and was appointed a Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the Welsh Office by Tony Blair in May 1997, but left government after the July 1998 reshuffle. After leaving government he chaired the Welsh Grand Committee and retired from parliament in 2005. He served as chair of Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust following his retirement and is now chairman of Wales Council for Voluntary Action and the Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. The Welsh Office () was a department in the Government of the United Kingdom with responsibilities for Wales. It was established in April 1965 to execute government policy in Wales, and was headed by the Secretary of State for Wales, a post which had been created in October 1964. 1987 United Kingdom General Election
The 1987 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 11 June 1987, to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. The election was the third consecutive general election victory for the Conservative Party, who won a majority of 102 seats and second landslide under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher, who became the first Prime Minister since the Earl of Liverpool in 1820 to lead a party into three successive electoral victories. The Conservatives ran a campaign focusing on lower taxes, a strong economy and strong defence. 1989 European Parliament Election In The United Kingdom
The 1989 European Parliament election, was the third European election to be held in the United Kingdom. It was held on 15 June. The electoral system was First-past-the-post voting in England, Scotland and Wales and Single transferable vote in Northern Ireland. The turnout was again the lowest in Europe. This election saw the best performance ever by the Green Party (UK) (formerly the Ecology Party), collecting over 2 million votes and 15% of the vote share. It had only received 70,853 as the Ecology Party in the previous election. However, because of the first past the post system, the Green Party did not gain a single MEP, while the Scottish National Party received 1 seat with only 3% of the vote share. The 1979 European Parliament election, was the first European election to be held in the United Kingdom after the European Communities (EC) decided to directly elect representatives to the European Parliament. It was held on 7 June. Elections were also held in eight other EC states. European elections were incorporated into UK law by the European Assembly Elections Act 1978. Out of the 410 members of the European Parliament, 81 were elected from the UK.
