Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum
The Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum (WMMSM) is a museum dedicated to preserving the history of rural education in Haldimand County and Canada at large, the heritage of the surrounding community, and the memory of its namesake, Wilson Pugsley MacDonald. Collection, Exhibits and Events WMMSM has a large collection of various artifacts relating to local heritage. The primary focus is on rural education however they hold a number of farming implements, type writers, medical tools, and more. WMMSM also has a number of photo albums featuring photos throughout the years of nearly every single one-room schoolhouse in the county. The WMMSM houses four exhibits. There are 2 permanent galleries, one is an exhibit chronologically laying out much of Haldimand's and Canada's history with rural education and the second is dedicated to the museum's namesake, Wilson MacDonald. Haldimand County is a rural city-status single-tier municipality on the Niagara Peninsula in Southern Ontario, Canada, on the north shore of Lake Erie, and on the Grand River. Despite its name, it is no longer a county by definition, as all municipal services are handled by a single level of government. Municipal offices are located in Cayuga. The Haldimand County Museum & Archives, located at 8 Echo Street in Cayuga, Ontario, Canada, is a museum that preserves and makes accessible evidence of the history of Haldimand County. Artifacts related to Haldimand County are restored and displayed in the museum galleries and grounds. The current curator is Karen Richardson. Built in 1857, this historic building once served as Caledonia, Ontario's first and only town hall. The building stopped being used as a town hall sometime around 1955 until it was reopened as "Edinburgh Square Heritage and Cultural Centre" in the spring of 1988.
