Willy Unger
Willy Unger (27 March 1920 – 23 June 2005) was a German Luftwaffe military aviator during World War II. As a fighter ace, he is credited with 24 enemy aircraft shot down in 59 combat missions. This figure includes 21 heavy bombers claimed on the Western Front in defense of the Reich missions and three on the Eastern Front. Born in Warstein, Unger learned to fly glider aircraft as a teenager. Following the outbreak of World War II in September 1939, he joined the Luftwaffe and served as an aircraft mechanic. In late 1942, he began pilot training, following completion in early 1944, he was posted to ''Jagdgeschwader'' 3 "Udet" (JG 3—3rd Fighter Wing). Unger claimed his first aerial victory on 11 April 1944. On 23 October 1944, was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for 19 heavy four-engined bombers shot down. Oskar Romm
Oskar "Ossi" Romm (18 December 1919 – 1 May 1993) was a German Luftwaffe military aviator and fighter ace during World War II. He is credited with 92 aerial victories achieved in 283 combat missions, 54 of which were close air support missions. This figure includes 82 aerial victories on the Eastern Front, and further ten victories over the Western Allies, including eight four-engined heavy bombers. Born in Hejnice, Romm, a half-Jew by the Nuremberg Laws, joined the military service in the Luftwaffe in 1939. Following flight training, he was posted to ''Jagdgeschwader'' 51 "Mölders" (JG 51—51st Fighter Wing) which was fighting in 1942. Flying with this wing, Romm claimed his first aerial victory on 4 December 1942 on the Eastern Front. Glider (aircraft)
A glider is a fixed-wing aircraft that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its lifting surfaces, and whose free flight does not depend on an engine. Most gliders do not have an engine, although motor-gliders have small engines for extending their flight when necessary by sustaining the altitude (normally a sailplane relies on rising air to maintain altitude) with some being powerful enough to take off by self-launch. Schneider Grunau Baby
The Schneider Grunau Baby is a single-seat sailplane first built in Germany in 1931, with some 6,000 examples constructed in some 20 countries. It was relatively easy to build from plans, it flew well, and the aircraft was strong enough to handle mild aerobatics and the occasional hard landing. The Schneider DFS 108-14 SG-38 ''Schulgleiter'' (School glider) is a German high-wing, Flying wires, cable-braced, single-seat primary glider that was designed by Schneider, Rehberg and Hofmann at Edmund Schneider's factory at Grunau in 1938, hence the designation. It was produced by several builders, including Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Segelflug (DFS). Design and development The SG 38 was designed to be a training glider for basic flight training by the National Socialist Flyers Corps, Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps (NSFK).
