William Towry Law
William Towry Law (16 June 1809 – 31 October 1886) a former Chancellor of the Diocese of Bath and Wells, who converted to Catholic Church, Catholicism in 1851. Early life He came from an old Westmorland family and was the youngest son of Edward Law, 1st Baron Ellenborough, Lord Ellenborough, Lord Chief Justice of England, and Anne Towry. He was educated at Eton College and Peterhouse, Cambridge, with an M.A. awarded in 1834. Career He entered the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 51st Regiment in 1826 and was based in Corfu. Together with his brother Henry Spencer Law, Henry he served on the staff of the French Nicolas Joseph Maison, General Maison commanding the French army in the Morea expedition, Morea and was present at the capture of Morea Castle. Diocese Of Bath And Wells
The Diocese of Bath and Wells is a diocese in the Church of England Province of Canterbury in England. The diocese covers the county of Somerset and a small area of Dorset. The Episcopal seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells is located in the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew in the city of Wells in Somerset. History Early name variation Before 909, Somerset lay within the diocese of Sherborne. At this date, Athelm (later Archbishop of Canterbury) was appointed the first bishop of the Diocese of Wells, making the secular church there into the diocesan cathedral. The secular canons at Wells vied with the monks of the monasteries at Glastonbury and Bath for supremacy in the diocese and it was with difficulty that the cathedral retained its status, so much so that the canons were reduced to begging in order to obtain their bread. George Cornelius Gorham
George Cornelius Gorham (1787–1857) was a priest in the Church of England. He was denied a vicarage due to his controversial views on infant baptism, and his appeal of that decision to a secular court caused religious controversy within the Anglican Church. Early life George Cornelius Gorham was born on 21 August 1787 in St Neots, Huntingdonshire, to Mary (née Greame) and George James Gorham. He entered Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1805, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree as third wrangler and Smith's prizeman in 1809. He was ordained as a deacon on 10 March 1811, despite the misgivings of the Bishop of Ely, Thomas Dampier, who found Gorham's opinions at odds with Anglican doctrine. Ernest Philip Alphonso Law CB CVO (26 August 1854 – 25 February 1930) was an English historian and barrister. Law came from an old Westmorland family and was a grandson of Lord Ellenborough, Lord Chief Justice of England. His parents were William Towry Law and Matilda Montgomery, daughter of Sir Conyngham Montgomery, 1st Baronet. The diplomat Sir Algernon Law was his brother and Major-Generals Francis Law and Victor Law were his half-brothers. A Roman Catholic, he was educated at Oscott College and University College, London, from which he graduated BA in 1874. He was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1878 and practised on the South-Eastern Circuit and at the Parliamentary bar. From 1891 to 1896 he was Comptroller and Secretary of the Provident Institution Savings Bank. Victor Lamar Law Jr. (born December 19, 1995) is an American professional basketball player for the Ryukyu Golden Kings of the Japanese B.League. Thomas Graves Law (1836–1904) was an English Oratorian priest, and later in life a historian and bibliographer. Life He was a grandson of Edward Law, 1st Baron Ellenborough. Born on 4 December 1836 at Yeovilton in Somerset, Law was third son and fourth of eight surviving children of William Towry Law (1809–1886), Lord Ellenborough's youngest son, by his first wife, Augusta Champagné (died 1844), fourth daughter of Thomas North Graves, 2nd Baron Graves. The eldest son Augustus Henry Law was a Jesuit missionary, and the second son, General Francis Towry Adeane Law, C.B. (1835–1901), saw much military service.
