William Samuel Murphy
William Samuel Murphy (12 February 1882 – 29 April 1961) was an Independent Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Portland, Ontario and became a physician. Murphy attended public school at Portland, then secondary school at Athens, Ontario before further studies at Queen's University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine (MD, CM) degrees. He settled in Smiths Falls, Ontario where he became a director of Northern Buttons Ltd. and from 1916 to 1918 served as that town's mayor. He was first elected to Parliament at the Lanark riding in a by-election on 29 July 1929. Portland, Ontario
Portland is a police village and unincorporated place located in the municipal township of Rideau Lakes, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in eastern Ontario, Canada. The community is on Ontario Highway 15 about northeast of Ontario Highway 401 at Kingston by road, and is situated in geographic Bastard Township on the southeast side of Big Rideau Lake. Portland was first settled in the early 19th century as one of the first settlements along the Rideau Waterway. The original seven houses in Portland, informally known as "The Landing", were a transfer point for passengers travelling from Brockville and continuing by barge to Perth. Smiths Falls is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada, southwest of Ottawa. As of the 2021 census it has a population of 9,254. It is in the Census division for Lanark County, but is separated from the county. The Rideau Canal waterway passes through the town, with four separate locks in three locations and a combined lift of over . The town's name was previously spelled Smith's Falls, and the spelling Smith Falls has been used, but "Smiths Falls" is now the official correct form. History Early history and naming Smiths Falls was incorporated first as a village in 1854, and then as a town in 1882. It is named after Thomas Smyth, a United Empire Loyalist who in 1786 was granted in what is present-day Smiths Falls.
