William Prescott (physician)
William Prescot (29 December 1788–18 October 1875) was an American physician, politician, and naturalist. Biography William Prescot was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, December 29, 1788. He was indentured to a farmer at sixteen years of age, received few educational advantages, taught, studied medicine, and in 1815 graduated at Dartmouth Medical School. He practised in Gilmanton and Lynn, and served in both branches of the Connecticut State Legislature. Dr. Prescott was an enthusiastic collector of minerals and shells, and was a member of many literary and scientific societies. Gilmanton, New Hampshire
Gilmanton is a town in Belknap County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 3,945 at the 2020 census. Gilmanton includes the villages of Gilmanton Corners and Gilmanton Ironworks. The town became well known in the 1950s after it was rumored that the popular novel ''Peyton Place'', written by resident Grace Metalious, was based on the town. History Gilmanton was incorporated in 1727. First known as "Gilmantown", the town was home to the Gilman family, originally settled at Exeter. Twenty-four members of the Gilman family received land grants in the new town of Gilmanton. Indentured servitude is a form of Work (human activity), labor in which a person is contracted to work without salary for a specific number of years. The contract called an "indenture", may be entered voluntarily for a prepaid lump sum, as payment for some good or service (e.g. travel), purported eventual compensation, or debt repayment. An indenture may also be imposed involuntarily as a Sentence (law), judicial punishment. The practice has been compared to the similar institution of slavery, although there are differences. Historically, in an apprenticeship, an apprentice worked with no pay for a master tradesman to learn a craft, trade. This was often for a fixed length of time, usually seven years or less. The Geisel School of Medicine is the medical school of Dartmouth College located in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Connecticut General Assembly (CGA) is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is a bicameral body composed of the 151-member House of Representatives and the 36-member Senate.
