William P. Pollock
William Pegues Pollock (December 9, 1870June 2, 1922) was a United States senator from South Carolina. Born near Cheraw, he attended public and private schools and the University of South Carolina at Columbia. He graduated from the law department of that university in 1891 and served as clerk of the Committee on the District of Columbia in the United States House of Representatives from 1891 to 1893. He was admitted to the bar the latter year and commenced practice in Cheraw. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits, and was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1894 to 1898. Pollock was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1900 As of March 1 ( O.S. 1918 United States Senate Special Election In South Carolina
The 1918 South Carolina United States Senate special election was held on November 5, 1918 simultaneously with the regular senate election to select the U.S. Senator from the state of South Carolina to serve the remainder of the term for the 65th Congress. The election resulted from the death of Senator Benjamin Tillman on July 3, 1918. William P. Pollock won the Democratic primary and was unopposed in the general election to win the remaining four months of the term. Democratic primary The South Carolina Democratic Party held the primary on August 27 and William P. Pollock had a slight lead, but did not garner over 50% of the vote and was forced into a runoff election against Thomas H. Peeples. Classes Of United States Senators The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years.
