William Neilson (Lord Provost)
William Neilson was a 17th/18th century Scottish merchant and mason who served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1717 to 1719. His term of office was sandwiched between the two terms of John Campbell. He was paid a salary of £300 per year from the City Treasurer Robert Wightman but was also the first Provost who had to swear an oath that he would receive no other monies (i.e. an anti-bribery oath). William Neilson (March 16, 1844 – February 10, 1915) was a Canadian businessman and founder of William Neilson Limited. Early life Neilson was born in Ramsay Township, Ontario, Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West. His working life began as a farmer in Rochester, New York, Rochester, New York, then moved on to being a machinist's apprentice in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. In 1873 journeyman Neilson worked in Brockville, Ontario, moving on in 1889 to a retail store. Afterward he sold his store in 1890 and moved to Toronto, Ontario and began a grocery store that eventually failed. Leaving his family behind, he moved to North Dakota to work as a farmer with his brother. Founding of William Neilson Limited Returning to Toronto, still in debt, he purchased some cows and began the sale of milk. Neilson then obtained ice cream manufacturing equipment. William Johnston Neilson (March 4, 1854 – July 17, 1903) was a physician and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Winnipeg North from 1900 to 1903 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative. William Allan Neilson
William Allan Neilson (28 March 1869 – 13 February 1946) was an American educator, writer and lexicographer, graduated in the University of Edinburgh in 1891 and became a PhD in Harvard University in 1898. He was president of Smith College between 1917 and 1939. Biography Neilson was born in Doune, Scotland on 28 March 1869. He emigrated to the United States in 1895, being naturalised 3 August 1905. He taught at Bryn Mawr College from 1898 to 1900, Harvard from 1900 to 1904, Columbia from 1904 to 1906, and Harvard again from 1906 to 1917. He served as President of Smith College from 1917 to 1939. Neilson was author of a number of critical works on William Shakespeare, Robert Burns and the Elizabethan theatre, editor of the Cambridge and Tudor editions of Shakespeare (1906, 1911) and editor of '' Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition'' (1934). William Francis Neilson (24 September 1850 – 2 May 1880) was an English-born New Zealand cricketer who played for Canterbury in the 1870s. Born in Liverpool, England, Neilson moved to New Zealand as a young man. He had his best cricket performances in the match against Otago in 1876–77, when he scored 57 not out in the second innings batting at number nine, and then took 5 for 19 to wrap up the Otago innings and the match. In 1877–78 Neilson organised and captained Canterbury's first trip to the North Island, when they dismissed Auckland for 13 at the Auckland Domain. A few weeks later he captained Canterbury to victory over the touring Australians, the Australians' only loss of the tour. He also led the Canterbury team that toured Tasmania and Victoria in 1878–79. William Arthur Neilson AC (27 August 1925 – 9 November 1989) was Premier of Tasmania from 1975 to 1977. Born in Hobart, and educated at Ogilvie High School, Neilson became a postman before entering politics. He married Jill Benjamin, daughter of Phyllis Benjamin, in Melbourne in 1949. They had one son Andrew and three daughters, Christine, Carol and Robin. Political career Neilson was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly on 23 November 1946 at the age of 21, representing the Labor Party (ALP). For many years he was not only the youngest MHA in Tasmania, but also the youngest person to be elected to any Australian parliament.
