William Marriott (engineer)
William Marriott (1857 – 17 November 1943) was the engineer, locomotive superintendent and traffic manager of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GN) Marriott was born at Basel, Switzerland where his father was a professor of English at the University of Basel. He was orphaned in 1868 and was brought to live in Bideford, receiving an education in England and on the continent. He served an apprenticeship with Ransomes & Rapier Ltd in Ipswich from 1875 to 1879 and as a draughtsman in 1880. He left Ransomes in 1881 to become an assistant engineer with Wilkinson & Jarvis Ltd completing a six-week unpaid trial period on the Yarmouth & North Norfolk Railway at Yarmouth. He was offered a permanent post which he accepted, and in 1883 he became the civil engineer and in 1884 the locomotive superintendent of the Eastern & Midlands Railway. William Thackeray Marriott
Sir William Thackeray Marriott (1834 – 27 July 1903), was a British barrister and Liberal and later Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1893. Life Marriott was the third son of Christopher Marriott, of Crumpsall, and his wife Jane Dorothea, daughter of John Poole. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. He was ordained deacon in 1858 and became curate of St George's, Hulme, where he was a supporter of the rights of the working classes. However, he declined to take priest's orders for conscientious reasons the following year. Marriott instead entered Lincoln's Inn in 1861 and was called to the Bar in 1864. He established a successful legal practice and was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1877 and elected a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1879. In 1880 he entered Parliament for Brighton as a Liberal. William Hammond Marriott
William Hammond Marriott (1790 – 1851) was an American Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. Early life Marriott was a grandson of John Marriott, an early Maryland pioneer on the Severn River. Shortly after graduating St. John's College in 1810, Marriott was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates where he served on the Grievances and Courts of Justice Committee through the opening of the War of 1812. During this time, Marriott built a log home on his plantation at Ivy Hill in Anne Arundel County. The location would later become Howard County, in the town of Marriottsville. Marriott formed the 8th Brigade of the Maryland Militia serving as a Brigade Major and Inspector. He served in the positions from 1812 to 7 January 1820. From 1818 to 1822, Marriott was reelected to the House of Delegates, later becoming Speaker in the 1822 and 1824 sessions.
