William Hilton (painter)
William Hilton (3 June 178630 December 1839) was a British portrait and history painter. He is also known as "William Hilton the Younger". Life and work William Hilton was born in the gatehouse of the Vicar's Court in The Close, Lincoln, England, a son of Mary and William Hilton (1752–1822). His father, a native of Newark, was a portrait painter and scenery painter for Mr and Mrs James Edward Miller and later Thomas Shaftoe Robertson's theatre companies. William was baptised at the church of St Mary le Wigford, Lincoln. William initially worked with his father. The company toured the Lincoln Theatre Circuit, and young William was encouraged by theatre proprietor Fanny Robertson to pursue a career as an artist. After he rose to become a Royal Academician he painted her. She retired to live near the Georgian Theatre (now Angles Theatre in Wisbech), and his painting of Fanny in the role of "Beatrice" was in 1866 in the nearby Wisbech Working Men's Institute. William Hilton Jr
William Hilton Jr (1617–1675) was an English explorer who explored the coast of The Carolinas in what is today the United States. Hilton was born on June 22, 1617, at Northwich, Cheshire, England. His father came to the New England colonies in 1621, with William Jr and his mother following two years later on the ship ''Anne''. In 1623, the elder Hilton founded the settlement of Dover, New Hampshire with his brother Edward. It is the oldest settlement in the state of New Hampshire as William Jr. was present at the founding as an infant. He traded with the Indians in his father's employment. He became a freeman in 1653 at Newbury, Massachusetts, then from 1654 onwards he resided in Charlestown, Massachusetts. His expeditions took him all over the east coast of America and to the Caribbean. William Hilton II (January 13, 1886 – February 13, 1964) was an American business executive and engineer who worked as the Vice President of the Maine-based Great Northern Paper Company from 1929 to 1957, and then as the company's Director from 1957 until his retirement on January 1, 1960. He is also known as one of the first forest fire lookouts in the United States. Early life and education William Hilton II was born on January 13, 1886, in Chesuncook Village, Maine, to Leonard and Adeline (''née'' Foss) Hilton. Leonard Hilton served as a Maine fish and game warden for Piscataquis County. At the time of Hilton's birth, fewer than 60 people lived in the village. Hilton lived a few years of his life in Chesuncook Village before his family moved to Greenville, Maine, nearly 60 miles away, so Hilton could attend primary school. William Hilton (died 1651) was an Irish politician, barrister and judge. He is now mainly remembered for his family connection to James Ussher, Archbishop of Armagh, whose sister Anne he married, and who furthered his career.Ball p.338 Early life His parentage and early life are obscure, but he is thought to have been born in Lifford, County Donegal, where the Hilton family were prominent in local affairs. George Hilton, a freeman of Lifford, may have been his cousin. George is recorded as leasing an estate at Lifford in 1616 from the original proprietor, the London-born builder and architect Peter Benson, who built the Walls of Derry and played a prominent role in the Plantation of Ulster.
