William Highett
William Highett (1807 – 29 November 1880) was a banker, landowner and politician in colonial Victoria. He was also a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Highett was born in Weymouth, Dorset, England, in December 1807. His parents were Joseph Highett and his wife Elizabeth, ''née'' Harding. There were at least three siblings, John (born 1810), Sarah (1812) and Mary (1817). Colonial Australia Along with his brother John, William Highett arrived in Hobart Town aboard the ''Elizabeth'' in February 1830. They had intended to continue on to Sydney but decided to settle in Tasmania, obtaining a grant of 500 acres of land near George Town. They later acquired additional land near Launceston and Campbell Town. While John managed their landholdings, William became the accountant of the Launceston branch of the Bank of Van Diemen’s Land in May 1832. John Wallace (Australian Politician)
John Alston Wallace (1828 – 17 October 1901) was an Australian politician Born in Rutherglen near Glasgow to draper James Wallace, he became a draper and miner in Renfrewshire, but when his first wife died in 1852 he emigrated to Melbourne, where he briefly returned to mining before becoming a storekeeper in Bendigo. He had several stores, hotels and businesses in the area and was an investor in a number of companies. In 1865 he married Theresa Monahan, with whom he had eight children; he would later remarry Ada Reid. James Maitland Stewart (May 20, 1908 – July 2, 1997) was an American actor and military pilot. Known for his distinctive drawl and everyman screen persona, Stewart's film career spanned 80 films from 1935 to 1991. Robert Stirling Hore Anderson, MLC (1821 – 26 October 1883) was an Irish-born solicitor and Australian colonial (Victorian) parliamentarian. Anderson was born at Articlave near Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland, and was educated at the Belfast Academy and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated B.A., 1845. After practising as a solicitor in Dublin for eight years he emigrated, and arrived in Victoria in June 1854. Whilst practising as a solicitor in Melbourne he resided in the suburb of Emerald Hill, and was Chairman of the Municipal Council. Anderson represented South Melbourne (October 1858 until its abolition in August 1859) and Emerald Hill (October 1859 to August 1864) in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. William Haines (Australian Politician)
William Clark Haines (10 January 1810 – 3 February 1866), Australian colonial politician, was the first Premier of Victoria. Haines was born in London, the son of John Haines, a physician. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated in medicine; he later practiced surgery for several years. In 1835 he married Mary Dugard, with whom he had nine children. Haines migrated to the Port Phillip District (later Victoria) in 1841 and settled in the Geelong area. He farmed in the area as well as practising as a surgeon. He was appointed a member of the Victorian Legislative Council (then a partly elected, partly appointive body) in 1851, and in 1853 he was elected for district of Grant. He served as colonial secretary 1854–55. Politically, he represented the small farmers against the squatters who owned most of Victoria's land. Matthew Hervey
Matthew Hervey (27 January 1820 – 1 December 1874) was a politician in colonial Victoria and Commissioner of Public Works. Hervey was born in Glasgow, Scotland, when eighteen years of age he emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, and ultimately was largely engaged in pastoral pursuits in the Port Phillip District, which in 1851 was constituted the separate colony of Victoria. He played two first-class cricket matches for Victoria in 1851 and 1852. Hervey was elected to the part-nominated Victorian Legislative Council on 3 June 1853 for the Murray district and sworn-in August 1853. When responsible government was achieved he was returned to the first wholly elective Legislative Council for the Eastern Province in November 1856. Mansfield is a small town in the foothills of the Victorian Alps in the Australian state of Victoria. It is approximately north-east of Melbourne by road.
