William Henry Metcalf (businessman)
William Henry Metcalf (July 19, 1821 – April 8, 1892) was an American businessman, photographer, and art collector in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The son of a portrait painter, Eliab Metcalf (1785–1834), he was born and raised in New York City. He relocated to Milwaukee in 1843, where he met Massachusetts-born entrepreneur Charles Trueworth Bradley. Together, they formed the Bradley & Metcalf Company, which grew into the largest shoe manufacturer and wholesaler in the state. After befriending photographer H. H. Bennett, Metcalf took an interest in the medium, even providing funding for the construction of H. H. Bennett Studio, Bennett's studio in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, Wisconsin Dells in 1875. Two years later, Metcalf accompanied archeologist Edward Sylvester Morse on a trip to Japan, where he produced Stereoscope, stereographic views of the country, later published and marketed by Bennett. Layton Art Gallery
The Layton Art Gallery is a defunct art museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Built at the initiative of British-American businessman Frederick Layton, the gallery was inaugurated in 1888 as the first public art institution in the city. Its one-story building, designed in the Greek Revival style by Scottish architect George Ashdown Audsley, stood at the corner of Mason and Jefferson streets, in downtown Milwaukee. The bulk of the gallery's works consisted of Layton's personal collection of European and American paintings and sculpture, assembled during the five years preceding the institution's opening, as well as subsequent purchases through an endowment. Following Layton's death, art educator Charlotte Partridge opened the Layton School of Art in the basement of the gallery, a decision originally met with opposition from part of the public. William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) - Lost Pleiad (1884)
William-Adolphe Bouguereau (; 30 November 1825 – 19 August 1905) was a French Academic art, academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings, he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of Classicism, classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. During his life, he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionism, Impressionist avant-garde. By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes. In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He finished 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are Lost artworks, still unknown.
