William Joseph Franks
William Joseph Franks (1830 – April 18, 1880) was a United States Navy sailor who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the American Civil War. Biography Franks was born in Pittsboro, North Carolina in 1830. He enlisted in the United States Navy on September 16, 1863, during the American Civil War. Franks distinguished himself in action at Yazoo City, Mississippi on March 5, 1864, when he and his shipmates from the landed a 12-pound howitzer to defend the city, which was threatened by strong Confederate forces. He and his group were in the thickest of the fighting, but it was never enough to drive them from their cannon. The actions of Franks and his men came to play the most important role in maintaining the Union position. Franks received the Medal of Honor and was promoted to Acting Master's Mate in recognition of his actions. Two of his shipmates, Seaman James Stoddard and Seaman Bartlett Laffey, were also awarded the medal for being on the gun crew. F ...

William Franks (died 1790)
William Franks (died 1790) was an early English property developer who was instrumental in the development of Percy Street, Rathbone Street and Charlotte Street in central London in the area now known as Fitzrovia. He married a member of the Pepys family and built the Percy Chapel in Charlotte Street. Family Franks married Mary Pepys, a relative of the diarist Samuel Pepys, in 1753. They had one child, William. Mary died in 1805. Building works In the 1760s, Franks, a "gentleman", was granted various building leases by land-owners Francis and William Goodge on ground in the area now known as Fitzrovia. As a result of these leases he was responsible for the construction of large parts of Percy Street, Rathbone Street and Charlotte Street.Percy Street.

William Franks (landowner)
William Franks (died July 1797) was a landowner in East Barnet, Hadley Wood and Cheshunt, and the owner of a large estate in the former Enfield Chace. Early life Franks was the son of William Franks (died 1790) who was important in the development of what is now known as Fitzrovia in central London and was responsible for the construction of large parts of Percy Street, Rathbone Street and Charlotte Street. William's mother was Mary Franks née Pepys (died 1805). Houses In 1786, Franks bought Mount Pleasant (later known as Belmont) from Sir William Henry Ashhurst. In 1790, he bought Beech Hill Park, the former home of Francis Russell, and sold Mount Pleasant to William Wroughton. Family In 1780, Franks married Jane Gaussen in Leyton, Essex. William Franks (cricketer)
William Franks (23 July 1820 – 8 February 1879) was an English first-class cricketer and barrister. Franks was born at Hatfield in July 1820. He was educated at Harrow School, before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge. A student of the Inner Temple, he was called to the bar in 1846. Franks played first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club from 1845 to 1848, making seven appearances. He had little success in his seven matches, scoring 44 runs with a highest score of 16. Franks twice served the Marquess of Salisbury as his official private secretary at Hatfield House, in 1852 and 1858–9. He also served as both a deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace for Hertfordshire, in addition to being a captain in the Hertfordshire Militia. William Sadler Franks
William Sadler Franks (26 April 1851 in Newark, Nottinghamshire – 19 June 1935 in East Grinstead) was a British astronomer. Franks was elected to the Royal Astronomical Society on 9 January 1880. From 1890 to 1894 he directed the British Astronomical Association’s Star Colour Section. He published a catalogue of the colours of 3890 stars. Franks was employed between 1892 and 1904 by the wealthy amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts as an assistant to support the photographic observations of star clusters and nebulae at Roberts's private observatory at Crowborough in Sussex. In 1910 he was hired by F. J. Hanbury (of the Allan and Hanbury firm) to work as an observer at Hanbury's private Brockhurst Observatory at East Grinstead in Sussex.
