Willard Ames Holbrook
Major General Willard Ames Holbrook (July 23, 1860 – July 18, 1932) was a United States Army officer who served for almost forty years. Coming from a family with long military tradition, he was the father of future Brigadier General Willard Ames Holbrook Jr. and brother of Major General Lucius Roy Holbrook. Early life Holbrook was born on July 23, 1860, in Arkansaw, Wisconsin. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1885. Among his classmates were future general officers such as Robert Lee Bullard, Joseph E. Kuhn, Beaumont B. Buck, Charles Henry Muir, William Franklin Martin, George Washington Burr, Daniel Bradford Devore. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Regiment (later he was assigned to the 7th Cavalry Regiment). Arkansaw, Wisconsin
Arkansaw is an unincorporated census-designated place in the eastern portion of the town of Waterville, in Pepin County, Wisconsin, United States. Located approximately west of Durand, it has the ZIP code of 54721. As of the 2010 census, its population was 177. From 1881 to 1886, the community was the county seat of Pepin County. History Arkansaw was founded in the early 1850s at a crossing of Arkansaw Creek, a tributary of the Eau Galle River. Initially built around lumbering, the first sawmill was opened in the community in 1852. The community was originally built near the center of three dams within a mile of each other on Arkansaw Creek. All three were wiped out in a flood in 1907. 7th Cavalry Regiment (United States)
The 7th Cavalry Regiment is a United States Army cavalry regiment formed in 1866. Its official nickname is "Garryowen", after the Irish air " Garryowen" that was adopted as its march tune. The regiment participated in some of the largest battles of the Indian Wars, including its famous defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn, where its commander Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer was killed. The regiment also committed the Wounded Knee Massacre, where more than 250 men, women and children of the Lakota were killed. The 7th Cavalry became part of the 1st Cavalry Division in the 1920s, it went on to fight in the Pacific Theater of World War II and took part in the Admiralty Islands, Leyte and Luzon campaigns. 1st Cavalry Regiment (United States)
The 1st Cavalry Regiment is a United States Army regiment that has its antecedents in the early 19th century in the formation of the United States Regiment of Dragoons. To this day, the unit's special designation is "First Regiment of Dragoons". While they were the First Regiment of Dragoons another unit designated the 1st Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1855 and in 1861 was re-designated as the 4th Cavalry Regiment (units were renumbered based on seniority and it was the fourth oldest mounted regiment in active service). Daniel Bradford Devore (May 14, 1860 – March 10, 1956) was a United States Army officer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In World War I he became a brigadier general and commanded a regiment of the US army. Military career Devore was born on May 14, 1860, in Monroe County, Ohio. he graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York in 1885. George Washington Burr
George Washington Burr Jr. (1865–1923) was an American general during World War I. Early life George Washington Burr Jr. was born in Tolono, Illinois to George and Nancy Burr on December 3, 1865. Career G. W. Burr attended the United States Military Academy and graduated in 1888. He became an officer in the 1st artillery and later taught Military Science and Tactics at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Mississippi until 1893. He worked for the Ordnance Department and was promoted to the rank of captain in April 1899. William Franklin Martin (July 19, 1863 – April 15, 1942) was a United States Army soldier who became a brigadier general. Early life and education William Franklin Martin was born on July 19, 1863, to Robert F. Martin and Mary E. (Lilley) Martin in Ripley, Ohio.
