Wildlife Act 1976, Ireland
The Wildlife Act 1976 is an Act of the Oireachtas protecting certain wildlife (including game) and flora in Ireland. With the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000, it is the principal national legislation for the protection of wildlife species and habitats in Ireland. Provisions The Act included a schedule of protected species, but it was relatively weak on habitat protection, particularly in the case of habitats on privately owned land. Subsequent measures to transpose the European Union's Birds Directive (originally 1979, replaced 2009) and Habitats Directive (1992) into Irish law have strengthened habitat protection. The Oireachtas ( ; ), sometimes referred to as Oireachtas Éireann, is the Bicameralism, bicameral parliament of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The Oireachtas consists of the president of Ireland and the two houses of the Oireachtas (): a house of representatives called Dáil Éireann and a senate called Seanad Éireann. Territorial waters are informally an area of water where a sovereign state has jurisdiction, including internal waters, the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone, and potentially the extended continental shelf (these components are sometimes collectively called the maritime zones). The attorney general of Ireland () is a constitutional officer who is the legal adviser to the Government and is therefore the chief law officer of the State. The Law Reform Commission (; also called the Law Reform Commission of Ireland) is law commission which was established in 1975 to examine the law of the Republic of Ireland. Activities The Commission was established on 20 October 1975 under the Law Reform Commission Act 1975. It is an independent body which examines areas of the law and proposes reforms or changes. According to its website, 70% of its proposals have resulted in the enactment of legislation effecting reforms. A forest is an ecosystem characterized by a dense community of trees. Natural Heritage Area
Natural Heritage Area () is a conservation designation denoting a protected area in Ireland. The Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000 makes legal provision for the designation and protection of a national network of Natural Heritage Areas (NHAs). The designation is currently used by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to protect wildlife habitats, such as raised bogs. 75 raised bogs were designated for protection in 2004 under the Wildlife Act. Geological sites It is also intended that the designation be used to protect geosites (sites of geological and geomorphological interest). Habitats Directive
The Habitats Directive (more formally known as Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora) is a directive adopted by the European Community in 1992 as a response to the Berne Convention. The European Community was reformed as the European Union the following year, but the directive is still recognised. The Habitats Directive required national governments to specify areas that are expected to be ensuring the conservation of flora and fauna species. This led to the setting up of a network of protected areas across the EU, along with 'Special Areas of Conservation', which together with the existing Special Protection Areas, became the so-called Natura 2000 network established to protect species and habitats.
