Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. However, jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. In the 1930s, arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, ...

On the album, Allen is joined by Lou Grassi's PoBand, featuring Perry Robinson (clarinet), Paul Smoker (trumpet), Steve Swell (trombone), Wilber Morris (bass), and Grassi (drums). Reception In a review for AllMusic, David Dupont wrote: "This session very much belongs to the ensemble as a whole, with the honored guest taking his place within the ensemble." The authors of ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' stated that Allen blends with the "dry, slightly academic sound" of the PoBand "rather well," and commented: "On '(Midnight) Blues', the horn-lines are trenchant but contemplative. 'Bird Symphony' and 'LouRa' are different kinds of ensemble piece, the former a sprawling, intense thing, the latter more upbeat and affirmative. ''Monks'' is an album by pianist Borah Bergman, bassist Wilber Morris, and drummer Sunny Murray. Featuring interpretations of music by Thelonious Monk, it was recorded on April 30, 1996, in New York City, and was issued in 2019 as a two-CD set by the Some Real Music label. Reception In a review for ''All About Jazz'', John Sharpe praised the trio's "startling reinvention" of Monk's music, and wrote: "Like a rich dessert, the session is perhaps best sampled in small portions to avoid calorific excess, but it is irresistible nonetheless." ''Point of Departures Ed Hazell called the album "a disc that will loosen the floorboards in your listening room," and state ...
