Wicket Dam
A wicket dam, Chanoine wicket movable dam, or barrage à hausse mobile is a movable barrier across the width of a river that is used to hold up water and allow navigation under low-water conditions. When the wickets are lowered during high-water conditions, the river flow is unimpeded. A navigation lock is usually constructed alongside the wicket dam. The wicket dam was invented in the 19th century by , an engineer in the French . Construction of wicket dams primarily occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. William Price Craighill
William Price Craighill (July 1, 1833 – January 18, 1909) was born in Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia), son of William Nathaniel Craighill & Sarah Elizabeth Brown. He was an author, Union Army officer in the American Civil War, and later served as Chief of Engineers. Army Corps of Engineers A classmate of Philip Sheridan, John Bell Hood, and James B. William Emery Merrill
William Emery Merrill (11 October 1837 – 14 December 1891) was an American soldier and military engineer. He was born at Fort Howard, Wisconsin to Captain Moses Merrill, who was killed in the Battle of Molino del Rey. He graduated first in his class at West Point in 1859, and from September, 1860, to July, 1861, was assistant professor of engineering there. In the Civil War, he served as assistant engineer in the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsular campaign and in the northern Virginia campaign, and from July, 1864, to September, 1865, commanded as colonel, the 1st U.S. Veteran Volunteer Engineer Regiment. The Davis Island Lock and Dam Site on the Ohio River in Avalon, Pennsylvania, is the site of the former Davis Island lock that was completed in 1885. The lock and dam existed from 1878 to 1922, designed by William Emery Merrill and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Davis Island Lock and Dam was the first dam that was constructed on the Ohio River. It officially opened on October 7, 1885, with a large dedication ceremony. The Peoria Lock and Dam is a historic lock and dam complex on the Illinois River at Creve Coeur, Illinois. The complex was built in 1938-39 as part of an effort to make the river navigable and establish a route for barges between Chicago and the Mississippi River. LaGrange Lock and Dam is a lock and dam complex on the Illinois River at Versailles, Illinois, Versailles, Illinois. The structure includes a dam and a lock.
