''Wicked: The Original Motion Picture Score'' is the film score composed by John Powell and Stephen Schwartz for the 2024 film '' Wicked'' by Jon M. Chu, the first of the two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. It was released by Republic Records on December 6, 2024. Production On July 8, 2024, it was announced that John Powell would be scoring the film with Stephen Schwartz, who had composed the music for the original stage musical. It was recorded at AIR Studios and Abbey Road Studios in London. Release The opening track of the album, "Arrival at Shiz University," was released as a promotional single on November 27, 2024. John Powell is an English film music composer and music conductor. He has been based in Los Angeles, California since 1997 and has composed the music to over 70 feature films. Winnie Holzman
Winnie Holzman is an American playwright, screenwriter, actress, and producer. She is best known for writing the book of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical '' Wicked'', and for co-writing the screenplays for the two films based on the musical, '' Wicked'' and '' Wicked: For Good''. She also created the television series ''My So-Called Life''. Holzman's other television work includes the series ''Thirtysomething'' and ''Once and Again''. Her other stage work includes short plays (in which she appeared with her actor husband, Paul Dooley) and the full-length drama, ''Choice''. The Academy Award for Best Original Score is an award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to the best substantial body of music in the form of dramatic underscoring written specifically for the film by the submitting composer. Some pre-existing music is allowed, though, but a contending film must include a minimum of original music. This minimum since 2021 is established as 35% of the music, which is raised to 80% for sequels and franchise films. Fifteen scores are shortlisted before nominations are announced.
