Wiang Chiang Khong (, ) is a small town (''thesaban tambon'') on the Mekong River in the northeast of Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, the central town of Chiang Khong District. Thesaban Tambon
Thesaban (, , , Pali, Pali: desapāla (protector of region) are the municipalities of Thailand. There are three levels of municipalities: city, town, and sub-district. Bangkok and Pattaya are special municipal entities not included in the ''thesaban'' system. The municipalities assume some of the responsibilities which are assigned to the districts (''amphoe'') or subdistricts (''tambon'') for non-municipal (rural) areas. Historically, this devolution of central government powers grew out of the Sukhaphiban () sanitary districts first created in Bangkok by a royal decree of King Chulalongkorn in 1897. Mekong
The Mekong or Mekong River ( , ) is a transboundary river in East Asia and Southeast Asia. It is the world's twelfth-longest river and the third-longest in Asia with an estimated length of and a drainage area of , discharging of water annually. From its headwaters in the Tibetan Plateau, the river runs through Southwest China (where it is officially called the Lancang River), Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and southern Vietnam. Chiang Rai (, ; , ) is one of Thailand's seventy-six Provinces of Thailand, provinces that lies in Northern Thailand#Regional classification of northern Thailand, upper northern Thailand and is Thailand's northernmost province. Amphoe Chiang Khong
Chiang Khong (, ; Lanna script: , ) is a district (''amphoe'') located in the northeastern part of Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand, with its seat being Wiang. The district borders six other districts in Chiang Rai province, with its north and northeast being bounded by the Mekong River, being connected to Laos on the other side by the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge. Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR), is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Ban Houayxay
Houayxay (, ; , ) (also ''Huoeisay'', ''Huai Sai'', ''Houei Sai'', ''Huay Xay'' or ''Huay Xai'') is a district in Bokeo Province, Laos, on the border with Thailand. The town lies on the Mekong River opposite Chiang Khong in Thailand. The Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Ban Houayxay, which opened in December 2013 and replaced ferry service across the river, is the northernmost road border crossing between the two countries. Asian Highway 3, which runs through Ban Houayxay, extends north to Yunnan Province of China and south to Chiang Rai Province of Thailand.
