Named after explorer Ernest Giles, it is the largest electorate in the state by area, covering of South Australian outback. Its main population centre is the industrial city of Whyalla on the far south-east border of the seat which represents half of the electorate's voters. Whyalla Barson is a suburb in South Australia located on the northern side of the city of Whyalla in the north east corner of Eyre Peninsula. It is named after Thomas Leonard Barson, superintendent of BHP in Whyalla from 1933 to 1938. The suburb was first established in 2011 with revisions to boundaries occurring both in 2013 and 2014. Whyalla Barson is located within the federal Division of Grey, the state electoral district of Giles and is located within both the local government area of the City of Whyalla and the unincorporated areas of South Australia. Whyalla
Whyalla is a city in South Australia. It was founded as Hummock's Hill, and was known by that name until 1916. It is the fourth most populous city in the Australian state of South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, and Gawler, and along with Port Pirie and Port Augusta is one of the three towns to make up the "Iron Triangle". It is a seaport located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula and is known as the "Steel City" due to its integrated steelworks and shipbuilding heritage. The Whyalla Steelworks is the major employer in the town, and has in February 2025 been put into voluntary administration by the Government of South Australia. Mullaquana is a suburb in the Australian state of South Australia located immediately adjoining the southern side of the city of Whyalla in the north east corner of Eyre Peninsula. The locality is bounded by Lincoln Highway to its northern side, the suburb of Whyalla to the east and by and the Spencer Gulf coastline to the south east. Its boundaries were established in June 2000 and revised again in 2011. Its name is derived from Mullaquana Road which is located within the locality and was selected instead of “Eight Mile Creek” in order to avoid confusion with a locality in the south east of South Australia. Whyalla Norrie is a suburb of Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. It was gazetted as a distinct suburb in 1967, and had its boundaries altered in 1975 and 2000. It is bounded by Iron Knob Road, Norrie Avenue, Broadbent Terrace and MacDouall Stuart Avenue. It is part of the City of Whyalla. It contains the Westland Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre on the Eyre Peninsula. Lincoln Highway is a highway in South Australia which links the cities of Port Augusta and Port Lincoln located on the east coast of Eyre Peninsula over a distance of . Lincoln Highway – along with Flinders Highway – presents an alternative but somewhat longer coastal route between Ceduna and Port Augusta, compared to the more direct route along Eyre Highway. It is designated route B100. Route After leaving Port Augusta, the highway passes through hot and arid saltbush-covered and scrub terrain. It soon passes through the largest and most significant town along the route, which is the steel city of Whyalla. BHP Whyalla Tramway
The BHP Whyalla Tramway is a gauge heavy-haul railway, long, on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It runs from haematite mines at Iron Monarch, Iron Baron and Iron Duke in the Middleback Range, about west of Whyalla, to company steelworks at the coastal city of Whyalla. Opened in 1901, it was built by, and until 2000 operated by, BHP. it was owned by Liberty Steel Group and operated on its behalf by rail operator One Rail Australia, which was sold in 2022 to Aurizon. History In 1899, BHP was granted a lease to mine iron ore from the Middleback Ranges. The ''Hummock Hill to Iron Knob Tramways and Jetties Act 1900'' authorised BHP to build a 54 kilometre line from Hummock Hill, Whyalla to Iron Knob that opened on 28 August 1901.
