Who Built Scotland
''Who Built Scotland: A History of the Nation in Twenty-Five Buildings'' is a book of essays first published by Historic Environment Scotland in 2017. The 25 essays on the Scotland, Scottish built environment, past and present, are contributed by five Scottish writers: novelist Alexander McCall Smith, history writer Alistair Moffat, publisher James Crawford, novelist James Robertson (novelist), James Robertson and poet Kathleen Jamie. The book was generally well received, with the main criticism being omissions from its "eclectic" selection of buildings. Publication history The hardback edition was published on 14 September 2017. A paperback edition was published in 2018 (); it bears the alternative subtitle ''25 Journeys in Search of a Nation'' on the cover. Contents Each of the five authors contributes five chapters. Alexander McCall Smith
Sir Alexander "Sandy" McCall Smith (born 24 August 1948) is a Scottish legal scholar and author of fiction. He was raised in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and was formerly Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh. He became an expert on medical law and bioethics and served on related British and international committees. He has since become known as a fiction writer, with sales in English exceeding 40 million by 2010 and translations into 46 languages. He is known as the creator of '' The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency'' series. The "McCall" derives from his great-great-grandmother Bethea McCall, who married James Smith at Glencairn, Dumfries-shire, in 1833. Early life Rodney Alexander Alasdair McCall Smith was born in 1948 in Bulawayo in the British colony of Southern Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe), to British parents.
