Whitley Abbey Bridge
Whitley is a suburb of southern Coventry in the West Midlands of England and a major centre of the English automotive corporation Jaguar Land Rover, including the headquarters of the company. The name Whitley is said to mean "from the white meadow". St James' Parish Church From 1938 to 1951, Church of England worship had been held in the chapel in the grounds of Whitley Abbey. Prior to that, services had been held in several temporary locations. In 1951 a dual-purpose church/community hall was constructed and opened on Abbey Road. In 1967, work on a new St James' Church and vicarage was started, alongside the previous building. The new church opened in 1968, the old church becoming the church hall. Anne, Princess Royal (Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise; born 15 August 1950) is a member of the British royal family. Coventry Zoo
Coventry Zoo was a zoo located in Whitley, Coventry, England. Its owners and directors were members of the famous Chipperfield circus family. The seven and a half acre site was opened to the public in 1966, attracting over 8,000 visitors on the peak day of its first week. However the success did not last long as within a decade local papers were reporting on the "shabbiness, lack of amenities and the conditions in which the animals were kept". Adding to the problems keeper Richard McCormack was charged by a two tonne hippo named Harry and suffered cracked ribs, broken collarbones, a crushed liver and bite marks. The Coventry Blitz ( blitz: from the German word ''Blitzkrieg'' meaning "lightning war" ) was bombing that took place on the British city of Coventry. The city was bombed many times during the Second World War by the German Air Force (''Luftwaffe''). The most devastating of these attacks occurred on the evening of 14 November 1940 and continued into the morning of 15 November. Background At the start of the Second World War, Coventry was an industrial city of around 238,000 people which, like much of the industrial West Midlands, contained metal and wood-working industries. Sandy Campbell (British Army Officer)
Alexander Fraser Campbell, GC (2 May 1898 – 18 October 1940), known as Sandy Campbell, was a British Army officer of the Royal Engineers who was posthumously awarded the George Cross for conspicuous gallantry in defusing a bomb in October 1940. Triumph Engineering Works unexploded bomb On 14 October 1940 at Chapel Street, Coventry, Second Lieutenant Campbell along with Sergeant Michael Gibson and Sappers W. Gibson, R. Gilchrest, A. Plumb, R.W. Skelton and Driver E.F.G. Taylor were tasked to deal with a unexploded bomb. The sappers spent almost four days uncovering the bomb which was found to contain a very damaged delayed-action fuse mechanism which could not be removed in situ. Armstrong Whitworth Whitley
The Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley was a British medium/heavy bomber aircraft of the 1930s. It was one of three twin-engined, front line medium bomber types that were in service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) at the outbreak of the World War II, Second World War. Alongside the Vickers Wellington and the Handley Page Hampden, the Whitley was developed during the mid-1930s according to Air Ministry List Of Air Ministry Specifications, Specification B.3/34, which it was subsequently selected to meet. In 1937, the Whitley formally entered into RAF squadron service; it was the first of the three medium bombers to be introduced. Following the outbreak of war in September 1939, the Whitley participated in the first RAF bombing raid upon German territory and remained an integral part of the early British bomber offensive. Coventry Airport is located south-southeast of Coventry city centre, in the village of Baginton, Warwickshire, England. The airport is operated and licensed by Coventry Airport Limited. Baginton
Baginton is a village and civil parish in the Warwick district of Warwickshire, England, and has a common border with the City of Coventry / West Midlands county. With a population of 801 ( 2001 Census), Baginton village is south of central Coventry, northeast of Kenilworth (its post town) and north of Leamington Spa. The population had reduced slightly to 755 at the 2011 Census. The Lucy Price playing field is situated centrally in the village. The ''Coventry Telegraph'' is a local English tabloid newspaper. It is published by Coventry Newspapers Limited, a subsidiary of Reach PLC Midlands Ltd, along with a number of other local publications. Publication history It was founded as ''The Midland Daily Telegraph'' in 1891 by William Isaac Iliffe (1843–1917), and was Coventry's first daily newspaper. Sold for half a penny, it was a four-page broadsheet newspaper. In 1917, ownership of the paper changed to Iliffe's son Edward Iliffe (later 1st Baron Iliffe), upon the father's death. The only day the newspaper was unable to publish was 15 November 1940, owing to the blitz raid on the city. It changed its name to the ''Coventry Evening Telegraph'' on 17 November 1941. Whitley Academy
Whitley Academy (formerly Whitley Abbey Community School) was a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Whitley, Coventry, England. The school was rebuilt and opened on 13 October 2000, replacing the former Whitley Abbey Comprehensive School built in the 1950s, which was one of the first comprehensive schools in Coventry. As of 28 January 2021, the school is permanently closed. In July 2007, Whitley Abbey Community School gained specialist status in Business and Enterprise and was renamed Whitley Abbey Business and Enterprise College.
