Primitive Radio Gods is an American alternative rock band from Southern California. What Are Records? (or W.A.R.?) is an independent record label located in Boulder, Colorado. Founded in New York City in 1991 by owner Rob Gordon, former director of A&R at EMI, the company moved to Boulder in 1994. Chris O'Connor (musician)
Chris O'Connor (born May 7, 1965) is a vocalist, guitarist, and bassist. His first band, The I-Rails, was formed with high school buddy, guitarist/songwriter Jeff Sparks in 1986. Together with drummer Tim Lauterio, The I-Rails made four albums in the course of a few years from the late 1980s up to 1991, none of which received much attention. The band officially broke up in 1991. Using material he and Sparks wrote for a planned fifth I-Rails album, O'Connor made the ''Rocket'' album entirely on his own on a broken-down 1969 Ampex 16-track tape deck and a budget of $1,000 and called himself Primitive Radio Gods, which is what would have been the band's last album title. The album wouldn't be released for four years however when it was picked up by Columbia Records, Germany. ''Rocket'' is the Primitive Radio Gods' debut album, released on June 18, 1996 by Columbia Records. Their best known single from this album, "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand", helped launch the band's career. Reception Despite the critical acclaim surrounding the lead single, the album as a whole received negative reviews from critics. AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote "With its loping, unthreatening hip-hop beats and its looped B.B. King sample, "Standing" had all the appeal of an adult novelty for most listeners—it was something that was out of the ordinary, to be sure, but not something that you would want to investigate much further.
