Whirlwind Recordings is a London, UK-based independent record label established in 2010 by Michael Janisch. History The label was founded in 2010 by bassist, composer, educator and producer Michael Janisch in order to release his debut solo album ''Purpose Built''. Whirlwind Festival In October 2013, Whirlwind Recordings held the Whirlwind Festival. The festival ran from October 10–12 at Kings Place in London. Michael Janisch (musician)
Michael Janisch (born February 2, 1979) is an American bassist, producer, composer and the owner of the record label Whirlwind Recordings. He was nominated for a MOBO Award in 2016 in the category Best Jazz Act. Life and career Born in Red Wing, Minnesota and raised in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, Janisch started playing piano at age four and electric bass at age 10. He was equally active in sports throughout his teenage years, mainly American football and track and field, and after high school received a scholarship to attend Minnesota State University, Mankato where he majored in history and played football (running back) and ran track and field (sprinter). An injury in his third season prompted his return to music and a transfer to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he concentrated on double bass. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Experimental music is a general label for any music or music genre that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions. Kings Place is a building in London's King's Cross area, providing music and visual arts venues combined with seven floors of office space. It has housed the editorial offices of ''The Guardian'' newspaper since December 2008 and is the former headquarters of Network Rail and CGI. Andre Canniere (born February 20, 1978, in Coudersport, Pennsylvania) is an American trumpet player and composer. He is based in London, England, where he's lived since 2008. Canniere has toured throughout the United States and Europe, performing at Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the London Jazz Festival, the Hague Jazz Festival and the Rochester International Jazz Festival, among others. Education Canniere received a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Mansfield University in 2001. He then studied at the Eastman School of Music, graduating in 2003 with a Masters in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media. While at Eastman, Canniere studied with Harold Danko, Clay Jenkins, Fred Sturm, Bill Dobbins and James Thompson. Greg Osby
Greg Osby (born August 3, 1960) is an American saxophonist and composer. Biography Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Osby studied at Howard University, then at the Berklee College of Music. He moved to New York City in 1982, where he played with Jaki Byard, Jim Hall, Muhal Richard Abrams, Andrew Hill, Jack DeJohnette, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. In 1985, he joined DeJohnette's group Special Edition. With Geri Allen, Steve Coleman, Gary Thomas, and Cassandra Wilson, he was a founding member of the M-Base Collective. Osby began recording albums under his own name for JMT Records in the mid-1980s, then signed with Blue Note in 1989. In 2007, he formed his own label, Inner Circle Music. Michael Clement Irving Gibbs (born 25 September 1937) is a Rhodesian-born English jazz composer, conductor, arranger and producer as well as a trombonist and keyboardist.
