Whetu Taewa
Whetu Taewa (born 19 October 1970) is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand six times between 1989 and 1996. Playing career New Zealand Whetu was born on the West Coast, New Zealand and started playing rugby league there; all grades up to the West Coast Representative side. In 1987 he made the New Zealand under 17's training squad and also débuted in the West Coast rugby union side. Taewa made the Junior Kiwis in 1988. In 1989 he moved to Christchurch and played for the Hallswell club. This was the year he first made the New Zealand national rugby league team, joining their tour to Great Britain. From 1990 to 1993 he was part of the successful Canterbury side of the era and again joined the Kiwis on the 1993 tour of Great Britain and France. Super League
Super League (also known as the Betfred Super League for sponsorship reasons, and legally Super League Europe Ltd.) is a professional rugby league competition, and the highest level of the British rugby league system, which consists of twelve teams, eleven from Northern England, the sport's heartland, and one from southern France. Super League began in 1996, replacing the Rugby Football League Championship First Division, First Division, and switching from a winter to a summer season. The regular season runs from February to September, with each team playing 27 games; 11 home games, 11 away games, Magic Weekend, and an additional four fixtures decided by league positions. The Sheffield Eagles are a professional rugby league club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. They play home games at the Olympic Legacy Park and compete in the Championship, the second tier of British rugby league. The Lion Red Cup was a New Zealand domestic rugby league competition that ran from 1994 to 1996 sponsored by brewers Lion Nathan. It was created due to the increase in public awareness of domestic rugby league due to the Auckland Warriors being accepted into the Winfield Cup. The competition was a huge success in its inaugural year, although it made a massive loss financially. The Balmain Tigers (also known as the Sydney Tigers from 1995 to 1996) are a rugby league club based in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Balmain, New South Wales, Balmain. They were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby League and one of the most successful in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles. In 1999 they formed a joint venture club with the Western Suburbs Magpies club to form the Wests Tigers for competition in the National Rugby League (NRL).
