Dark Tranquillity
Dark Tranquillity is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Gothenburg. They are considered one of the pioneering acts of the Swedish death metal, Gothenburg metal scene, which also includes bands such as In Flames and At the Gates - regarded as the Gothenburg fathers in the film entitled ''Out of Nothing: A DT Documentary'' released by Century Media, which was filmed in their home town in April 2009. After a nearly three-decade long collaboration of four founding members frequent lineup changes between 2016 and 2021 have left only vocalist Mikael Stanne as an original member, together with long-time keyboardist Martin Brändström. History Early years and ''Skydancer'' (1989–1993) Dark Tranquillity was formed in 1989 by guitarists Mikael Stanne and Niklas Sundin, vocalist Anders Fridén, drummer Anders Jivarp, and bassist Martin Henriksson, under the name Septic Broiler. While scholars agree that music is defined by a small number of specific elements, there is no consensus as to what these necessary elements are. Music is often characterized as a highly versatile medium for expressing human creativity. Diverse activities are involved in the creation of music, and are often divided into categories of composition, improvisation, and performance. Music may be performed using a wide variety of musical instruments, including the human voice. S, or s, is the nineteenth letter of the Latin alphabet, used in the English alphabet, the alphabets of other western European languages and other latin alphabets worldwide. Its name in English is ''ess'' (pronounced ), plural ''esses''. History Northwest Semitic šîn represented a voiceless postalveolar fricative (as in 'ip'). It originated most likely as a pictogram of a tooth () and represented the phoneme via the acrophonic principle. Ancient Greek did not have a "sh" phoneme, so the derived Greek letter Sigma () came to represent the voiceless alveolar sibilant . While the letter shape Σ continues Phoenician ''šîn'', its name ''sigma'' is taken from the letter ''Samekh'', while the shape and position of ''samekh'' but name of ''šîn'' is continued in the '' xi''. Within Greek, the name of ''sigma'' was influenced by its association with the Greek word (earlier ), "to hiss". The original name of the letter "Sigma" may have been ''san'', but due to the ear ... Dark Tranquillity Albums
Darkness is the condition resulting from a lack of illumination, or an absence of visible light. Human vision is unable to distinguish colors in conditions of very low luminance because the hue-sensitive photoreceptor cells on the retina are inactive when light levels are insufficient, in the range of visual perception referred to as scotopic vision. The emotional response to darkness has generated metaphorical usages of the term in many cultures, often used to describe an unhappy or foreboding feeling. "Darkness" may also refer to night, which occurs when the Sun is more than 18° below the horizon. Scientific Perception The perception of darkness differs from the mere absence of light that sometimes lead to afterimages. In perceiving, the eye is active, and the part of the retina that is unstimulated produces a complementary afterimage. Physics In terms of physics, an object is said to be dark when it absorbs photons, causing it to appear dim compared to other objects. ... Projector (Dark Tranquillity Album)
''Projector'' (stylized : projector, or on the reissue p.r.o.j.e.c.t.o.r.) is the fourth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band Dark Tranquillity. It is the final Dark Tranquillity album to feature guitarist Fredrik Johansson. Lineup change In January 1999, with the album recorded months prior, and its release months ahead, Johansson and Dark Tranquillity mutually split, due to Johansson wanting to focus on his family and his day job. Bassist Martin Henriksson replaced Johansson on guitar, and Michael Nicklasson joined the band afterward, taking Henriksson's former position on bass guitar. The introduction of piano, keyboards, and electronics — and their desire to integrate these elements into its sound — led the band to hire Martin Brändström as a full-time keyboardist. With the lineup, they played live bonus tracks of the reissue of this album and filmed a music video for "ThereIn". Style ''Projector'' marked a noteworthy progression in the band's style, fea ... Melodic Death Metal
Melodic death metal (also referred to as melodeath) is a subgenre of death metal that employs highly melodic guitar riffs, often borrowing from traditional heavy metal (including New Wave of British Heavy Metal). The genre features the heaviness of death metal but with highly melodic or harmonized guitar riffs and solos, and often features high-pitched shrieked vocals (differing from traditional death metal) alongside the low-pitched growls commonly featured in traditional death metal. Pioneered by the English heavy metal band Carcass with their 1993 album '' Heartwork'', melodic death metal developed further in Sweden (developed by bands like At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames) in the mid-1990s. The Swedish death metal scene did much to popularise the style, soon centering in the " Gothenburg metal" scene. At the Gates' '' Slaughter of the Soul'', Dark Tranquillity's '' The Gallery'', and In Flames' '' The Jester Race'', all released in the mid-1990s, were highly i ... Haven (Dark Tranquillity Album)
''Haven'' is the fifth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band Dark Tranquillity, released on 25 July 2000. This release is the first recorded as a six-piece, the first to feature Mikael Niklasson and Martin Brändström, and the first release with Martin Henriksson on guitar, switching from his previous position on bass. Style ''Haven'' retains some of the death metal elements of past albums, adding more electronics and more polished production. Mikael Stanne mostly uses harsh vocals, but his clean vocals that were prominent on the previous album, ''Projector'', are used on "Emptier Still" and bonus track "In Sight", the latter showing more of a cleanly-sung rock style. Track listing Videos * "Therein" (first digipak and Japan only) Reception Like the previous album, ''Projector'', critical reception was mixed. Guitarist Niklas Sundin has been quite critical of the album, stating that this is his least favourite Dark Tranquillity album, considering it "too safe ...
