When We Are Married (musical)
''When We Are Married'' is an Australian musical with music by Tommy Tycho, lyrics by Alan Kitson and book by Kitson and William Orr. It is an adaptation of English playwright J. B. Priestley's 1938 play of the same name, set in Sydney in 1908. The musical opened on 27 August 1970 at the Phillip Theatre in Sydney. The cast featured Johnny Lockwood, Jill Perryman, Barbara Wyndon, Susan Swinford, Leila Blake, Joan Bruce, Johnny Ladd, Henri Szeps and Raymond Duparc. Lorrae Desmond performed "Get Out Today Start Moving" from the musical on a 1970 recording of songs from Australian musicals, ''Australian Musicals – Now!'' Tommy Tycho
Thomas Tycho AM MBE DMus (11 April 19284 April 2013) was Hungarian-born Australian pianist, conductor, composer and arranger. He was active in both classical music and pop. He was associated with musical productions on Australian television for many years from its inception in 1956, including such programs as ''The Mavis Bramston Show''. The recorded version of the National Anthem ''Advance Australia Fair'' that is now usually used to accompany singers at major sporting and community events is Tommy Tycho's arrangement. He wrote a number of film scores, and his activities bridged both popular and classical styles. Biography Tycho was born in Budapest in April 1928. His father was a senior government official and his mother was an opera singer who had retired to raise a family. His musical life started as a child prodigy pianist. ''When We Are Married'' is a comedy by the English dramatist, J. B. Priestley, written in 1934. It was first performed in London at the St. Martin's Theatre, London on 11 October 1938, and transferred to the larger Prince's Theatre in March 1939 and ran until 24 June of that year. Plot A group of three couples, old friends and all married on the same day in the same chapel, gathers at the Helliwells’ home to celebrate their silver anniversary. The Phillip Street Theatre (succeeded by the Phillip Theatre) was a popular and influential Australian theatre and theatrical company, located in Phillip Street in Sydney that was active from 1954 and 1971 that became well known for its intimate satirical revue productions. History Founding William Orr was a Scottish-born impresario from Glasgow who had a background as a director and theatre administrator in London before coming to Australia. Orr felt that there was a market in Australia for the new British theatre craze, the intimate topical satirical revue, and he pioneered the format in Sydney during 1954. Johnny Lockwood
John Sidney Lockwood (7 December 192025 April 2013) was a British variety entertainer, comedian and actor, who also became notable in Australia after emigrating to that country. Lockwood worked in radio, theatre, television and film. He became well known for his role in the Australian television soap opera ''Number 96'' playing bumbling Hungarian Jewish deli proprietor Aldo Godolfus from 1972 until 1975, a centralcast member opposite Philippa Baker who would play his future wife Roma and naive rebellious teenage daughter Rose (played by Vivienne Garrett). Jill Perryman
Jill Perryman AM, MBE (born 30 May 1933) is an Australian former stage and screen actress and singer. Combining both her stage acting and her singing, she featured in numerous musical theatre roles, over eight decades and spanning 70 years of performing, starting from the age of three in a local production of Austrian operetta White Horse Inn She toured twice with a production of '' Hello Dolly!'' firstly in 1965, as an understudy to American star Carole Cook, as a member of the ensemble cast as character Irene Molley and again almost thirty years later in 1994 in the leading role. Henri Szeps OAM, (born 2 October 1943) alternatively Henry Szeps, is an Australian character actor of theatre and television. He has also featured in films and worked in voice roles, and has worked in productions in the United Kingdom. Early life Szeps was born in Lausanne, Switzerland to Polish parents. Due to the German invasion of Poland during World War II, his parents fled to France in 1938. His father left the family to join the French Resistance. In 1943, his mother and three-year-old sister made their way to a refugee camp in Lausanne, where Henri was born. At 1 months he was fostered to a Swiss couple in Blumenstein. His mother reclaimed him when he was three years old, and returned to the Swiss couple when he was 4. Lorrae Desmond (2 October 1929 – 23 May 2021) born as Beryl Hunt, was an Australian Gold Logie-award-winning singer, recording artist, radio and television presenter, character actor, and playwright, with a career that spanned over 55 years both locally and the United Kingdom.
