Wheelchair Basketball At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
The Wheelchair Basketball competition of the 2008 Summer Paralympics is held in Beijing National Indoor Stadium and Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium between September 7, 2008 and September 16, 2008. There will be two medals awarded in this event. Medalists Source: Paralympic.org Classification Classification is an important element that will ensure athletes can compete in a fair situation. A certain committee will give athletes who can take part in this sport an eight-level-score specific to basketball, ranging from 1 to 4.5. Lower scores represent a larger disability. The sum score of all players on the court cannot exceed 14. Teams There will be 12 male teams and 10 female teams taking part in this sport. Beijing National Indoor Stadium
The National Indoor Stadium (), a.k.a. ''Folding Fan'' (折扇), is an arena located at Olympic Green in Chaoyang, Beijing, China. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 people, and was constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics. It is nicknamed ''the Fan'' (扇子, ''shànzi'') due to its design resembling a traditional Chinese folding fan. History Glöckner³ designed the indoor stadium, in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD), after winning an international architectural competition in October 2003. Tige Arthur Simmons, OAM (born 5 May 1977) is an Australian wheelchair basketball player who represented Australia in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games. Biography Tige Simmons became a paraplegic due to a motorbike accident. He was part of the gold medal-winning Australian men's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, for which he received a Medal of the Order of Australia. Richard "Bear" Peter (born September 10, 1972) is a Canadian First Nations wheelchair basketball and para-badminton player. Peter was born in Duncan, British Columbia, and currently resides in Vancouver. When Richard was four years old, he was injured in a bus accident, leaving him in a wheelchair ever since. He began playing wheelchair basketball at the age of 15 when he was inspired by a team that came to his school and introduced him to wheelchair sports. Since then, Peter has competed in the 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games, winning the gold medal for wheelchair basketball for three of those years. David "Dave" Durepos (born July 14, 1968) is a Canadian retired wheelchair basketball player. He is married to fellow Paralympian Sabrina Pettinicchi. As a member of Team Canada, Durepos competed in five Paralympic Games where he won 3 gold medals along with one silver. On September 25, 2012, the City of Fredericton proclaimed that date to be Dave Durepos Day. Early life Durepos was born on July 14, 1968, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Abditatch "Abdi" Fatah Dini (born 1 January 1981) is a professional Canadian wheelchair basketball player. He is currently on the Canadian Team and has won numerous medals in his international career. He has also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
