"What If I Said" is a song written and performed by American country music artist Anita Cochran as a duet with Steve Wariner. The single was released in November 1997 as was Cochran's only No. 1 single on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, as well as her only Top 40 single on that chart. In addition, the song was Wariner's first chart entry in three years, as well as his first No. 1 since 1989's " I Got Dreams." Anita Renee Cockerham (born February 6, 1967), known professionally as Anita Cochran, is an American country music singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She has released two albums for Warner Bros. Records Nashville and one for Straybranch Records. Cochran is best known for her late 1997-early 1998 single " What If I Said", a duet with Steve Wariner that reached the number-one position on the ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs charts. Biography Anita Cochran was born in South Lyon, Michigan, into a family that enjoyed listening to country music. She began to play guitar at an early age, and later learned to play banjo, mandolin and Dobro as well. A local country musician, Anita's father often took her to country music festivals. A steel guitar ( haw, kīkākila) is any guitar played while moving a steel bar or similar hard object against plucked strings. The bar itself is called a "steel" and is the source of the name "steel guitar". The instrument differs from a conventional guitar in that it is played without using frets; conceptually, it is somewhat akin to playing a guitar with one finger (the bar). Known for its portamento capabilities, gliding smoothly over every pitch between notes, the instrument can produce a sinuous crying sound and deep vibrato emulating the human singing voice. Typically, the strings are plucked (not strummed) by the fingers of the dominant hand, while the steel tone bar is pressed lightly against the strings and moved by the opposite hand. Brent Rowan (born May 28, 1956 in Waxahachie, Texas) is an American session musician and record producer who works primarily in country music. Active since the 1970s, Rowan began working with John Conlee through the recommendation of record producer Bud Logan.
