Cardston, Alberta
Cardston is a town in Alberta, Canada. It was first settled in 1887 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) who travelled from Utah, via the Macleod-Benton Trail, to present-day Alberta in one of the century's last wagon migrations. The founder of the town was Charles Ora Card. The combined church and school was completed by January 29 the year following their arrival. History Cardston was "dry" ( alcohol free) for more than a century after the 1915 Alberta liquor plebiscite. In 2023, following a municipal plebiscite in which residents voted narrowly in favour of the measure, the town council voted 5-2 to allow alcohol to be served in restaurants and recreation facilities such as the local golf course. Liquor stores, lounges, nightclubs and other alcohol-primary businesses remain prohibited, and there are no licensed premises in which to use video lottery terminals. Glenwood, Alberta
Glenwood is a village in southern Alberta, Canada. It is located north of the Cardston, Alberta, Town of Cardston, in Cardston County. The village was named for a man named Edward Glen Wood. The founder of the village was Edward J. Wood, successor to Latter Day Saint leader Charles Ora Card, the founder of Cardston. Both Glen and Edward Wood were from Salt Lake City, Utah, and are buried in Cardston. The old name for the village was Glenwoodville until 1979. History Surveying for the community of originally named Glenwoodville was done by Seymour B. Smith. The townsite was designed in the Mormon, Latter Day Saints Plat of Zion grid; Glenwood consisted of approximately 640 acres, divided into blocks of eight acres each,and building lots of one acre each with streets eight rods wide running at right angles through the town. Magrath, Alberta
Magrath is a town in Cardston County, Alberta, Canada. Its population was 2,481 in 2021. Magrath is (approximately 25 minutes) south of Lethbridge and (approximately 2.5 hours) south of Calgary. History Magrath was established in 1899 by settlers sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from Utah and Idaho. These Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settlers were recruited by the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company to construct irrigation works in the area funded by British interests by the family of Sir Alexander Galt. The settlers were paid in cash and land in the town. This was the first major irrigation work in Canada and was made possible by the settlers' experience with the extensive irrigation projects undertaken by their church in Utah and Idaho. Mountain View is a hamlet in Alberta, Canada within Cardston County. It is located along Highway 5 approximately west of Cardston and east of Waterton Lakes National Park near the United States border. Stirling School
Stirling School, is a public school that covers kindergarten through high school (K-12) located in Stirling, Alberta, Canada in the Westwind School Division No. 74. History Prior to 1902 school was held in the L.D.S Church next to the school grounds. In 1901 plans were drawn up to create the Galt School District No. 647. In 1902 a large two story brick school house was built made completely out of bricks baked from Kipp Coulee creek in Stirling. On a cold day in 1934 the top floor was claimed by fire. It was said to be caused by a chimney fire. For the duration of the renovations students were sent to the Ogden House at 441-4th street until the second floor was rebuilt. In the early 1950s the original brick building became to small for the growing student population and was then condemned and replaced in 1957 with a modern building sitting on the original location of the first L.D.S.
