West
West is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from east and is the direction in which the Sun sets on the Earth. Etymology The word "west" is a Germanic word passed into some Romance languages (''ouest'' in French, ''oest'' in Catalan, ''ovest'' in Italian, ''vest'' in Romanian, ''oeste'' in Spanish and Portuguese). Westward, Cumbria
Westward is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Cumbria. It had a population of 814, at the 2001 census, increasing slightly to 838 at the 2011 Census. Westward is located on the south side of the Wiza Beck. It is 3.3 miles (5.3 km) to the south of the town of Wigton. Administratively it forms part of the district of Cumberland. ''Westward'' is a series of Tycoon video games developed by Sandlot Games, the makers of the equally popular ''Tradewinds'' series. ''Westward'' Plot The game is a strategy game set in the Old West and revolves around a slew of characters making a name for themselves in various towns. These include Hope River, Lightning Bluff, and Paradise Falls. The main antagonist of the game is Doc Vostrikov, a Russian prospector who, along with his henchmen the Copperhead Gang, swindles these settlers. Gameplay The player controls various characters as they build up their settlements, defend themselves from bandits, and unlock new buildings. The story begins at Camp Chippewa, where new players are tutored. As the game progresses, the player must keep an eye out for bandits, plagues, and natural disasters. Westward Islet
Ducie Island (; ) is an uninhabited atoll in the Pitcairn Islands group, which also includes Pitcairn, Henderson and Oeno islands. Ducie lies east of Pitcairn Island, and east of Henderson Island, and has a total area of , which includes the lagoon. It is long, measured northeast to southwest, and about wide. The island is composed of four islets: Acadia, Pandora, Westward and Edwards. Despite its sparse vegetation, the atoll is known as the breeding ground of a number of bird species. More than 90% of the world population of Murphy's petrel nests on Ducie, while pairs of red-tailed tropicbirds and fairy terns make around 1% of the world population for each species. Westward Television was the first ITV franchise-holder for the South West of England. It held the franchise from 29 April 1961 until 31 December 1981. After a difficult start, Westward Television provided a popular, distinctive and highly regarded service to its region, until heavy competition led to its franchise not being renewed by the IBA. Westward launched the career of many broadcasters who became well known nationally, won numerous awards for its programming, and heavily influenced its successor, TSW. History The company's first chairman was Peter Cadbury, who had left the board of Tyne Tees Television to set up the company and bid for the south-west franchise, which he won against 11 competing bids. Westward Ho!
Westward Ho! is a seaside village near Bideford in Devon, England. The A39 road provides access from the towns of Barnstaple, Bideford, and Bude. It lies at the south end of Northam Burrows and faces westward into Bideford Bay, opposite Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows. There is an electoral ward with the same name. The population at the 2011 census was 2112. Name Westward Ho! is noted for its unusual place name. The village name comes from the title of Charles Kingsley's novel '' Westward Ho!'' (1855), which was set in nearby Bideford. The book was a bestseller, and entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to develop tourism in the area. The Northam Burrows Hotel and Villa Building Company, chaired by Isaac Newton Wallop, 5th Earl of Portsmouth, was formed in 1863, and its prospectus stated: The hotel was named the Westward Ho!-tel, and the adjacent villas were also named after the book.
