Westmoreland Eastern
Westmoreland Eastern is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Representatives of the Jamaican Parliament. It elects one Member of Parliament by the first past the post system of election. The constituency consists of the eastern part of Westmoreland Parish. It is represented by Jamaica Labour Party MP Daniel Lawrence. In the 1989 general election, the constituency was covered by Westmoreland North Eastern and Westmoreland South Eastern. Jamaica (; ) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning in area, it is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean (after Cuba and Hispaniola). Jamaica lies about south of Cuba, and west of Hispaniola (the island containing the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic); the British Overseas Territory of the Cayman Islands lies some to the north-west. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Many of the indigenous people either were killed or died of diseases, after which the Spanish brought large numbers of African slaves to Jamaica as labourers. Esme Grant
Esme Melbro Grant (née Muir; 20 September 1920 – 25 August 1987) was a Jamaican politician. She was one of the first women elected to the Parliament of Jamaica. Political career She was JLP candidate for Westmoreland Central in the 1962 Jamaican general election. She impressed the party leader that she was made the first female parliamentary secretary of independent Jamaica — working at the education ministry. In the 1967 general election she was elected in Westmoreland North Eastern but lost to Jim Thompson in the 1972 general election. Euphemia Williams
Euphemia ( el, Εὐφημία; "well-spoken f), known as the All-praised in the Eastern Orthodox Church, was a virgin, who was martyred for her faith at Chalcedon in 303 AD. According to tradition, Euphemia was arrested for refusing to offer sacrifices to Ares. After suffering various tortures, she died in the arena at Chalcedon from a wound sustained from a bear. Her tomb became a site of pilgrimages. She is commemorated on September 16. Historical background Euphemia's name and year of death are recorded in the 5th century '' Martyrologium Hieronymianum'', the earliest extant list of Christian martyrs. Headly Cunningham
Headley Washington Cunningham, (12 October 192922 September 2018) was a Jamaican politician. A member of the People's National Party, he was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993. Early life Cunningham was born on 12 October 1929 in Darliston, Westermoreland, Jamaica, the youngest of three children to Frank and Estella (''née'' Maxwell). He was educated at Cornwall College in Montego Bay, St James, after which he found employment as an accountant at the Kingston-based Public Works Department. 1989 Jamaican General Election
General elections were held in Jamaica on 9 February 1989. The result was a victory for the People's National Party, which won 45 of the 60 seats. Voter turnout was 78.4%. They were the first seriously contested elections since 1980, as the PNP had boycotted the 1983 Jamaican general election, 1983 snap elections to protest the refusal of the ruling Jamaican Labour Party to update the electoral roll amid allegations of voter fraud.
