Westerwolde (region)
Westerwolde () is a region in the province Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. The region is located in the most eastern part of the Netherlands, alongside the German border. It is situated around the rivers Mussel Aa, Ruiten Aa, and Westerwoldse Aa, and it contains the villages Bellingwolde, Blijham, Onstwedde, Sellingen, Ter Apel, Vlagtwedde, Vriescheloo, and Wedde. The people in Westerwolde speak Dutch and the West Low German dialect ''Westerwolds''. Onstwedde
Onstwedde () is a village in the region of Westerwolde and part of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Stadskanaal. Onstwedde was also the former name of the municipality of Stadskanaal, until 1969. History Onstwedde was first mentioned in 875 as Uneswido in documents of the Werden Abbey. The name means the forest (-wido similar to the English wood) of Une (first name). The village is a double ''esdorp'', a communal pasture surrounded by houses. The northern pasture was called Wold, and the southern pasture Loug. Onstwedde was a part of Westerwolde, a region dominated by raised bogs which formed the natural border between Groningen, East Frisia and the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. Ommelanden
The ''Ommelanden'' (; ) are the parts of Groningen province that surround Groningen city. Usually mentioned as synonym for the province in the expression ("city and surrounding lands"). The area was Frisian-speaking, but under the influence of the Saxon city of Groningen most of the area turned to speaking Low Saxon. A reminder of the Frisian past is the Ommelanden flag which looks a lot like the Frisian provincial flag but has more and narrower stripes and more red (stylised heart-shaped leaves of yellow water-lily). West Low German
Low Saxon (), also known as West Low German () are a group of Low German dialects spoken in parts of the Netherlands, northwestern Germany and southern Denmark (in North Schleswig by parts of the German-speaking minority). Wedde
Wedde () is a village in the municipality Westerwolde in the province Groningen in the Netherlands. It is located 9 km southeast of Winschoten. The castle Wedderborg is located in the village. History Most of Westerwolde was a raised bog with few inhabitants, however it formed a natural border between Groningen, East Frisia and the Prince-Bishopric of Münster, and therefore changed ownership many times during its history. Vriescheloo (; ) is a village in the municipality of Westerwolde in the Netherlands. History Vriescheloo is a linear settlement on the sand ridge which formed the old road between Groningen and Germany. The village dates from the 11th or 12th century. Its first inhabitants were mainly peat harvesters, and it developed into an agricultural community. Ter Apel (; Gronings: ''Troapel'') is a village with a population of 9,914 residents in the municipality Westerwolde (municipality), Westerwolde in the northern Netherlands, in the province Groningen (province), Groningen in the region Westerwolde (region), Westerwolde. Sellingen
Sellingen (; ) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is a part of the municipality of Westerwolde, and lies about northeast of Emmen. In 2021, statistical area "Sellingen", which also includes the surrounding countryside, had a population of 1,880, and the village of Sellingen had 1,045. Overview Sellingen was founded in the 12th century on a sandy ridge along the River . The church dates from the 1300s, however a church in Sellingen was already mentioned around 1150 on a list of possession of the Diocese of Osnabrück. In the 15th century, the Ter Apel Monastery was part of the parish of Sellingen. Blijham () is a village with a population of 2,240 in the municipality of Westerwolde in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The origins of the settlement date back to the 11th century. Until 1968, Blijham was part of the municipality of Wedde. Until 2017, it was part of the municipality of Bellingwedde.
