The Western Jewish History Center existed as part of the Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley, California, Berkeley, California, from 1967 to 2010. It is now the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, administered as part of the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. Berkeley ( ) is a city on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California, United States. It is named after the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley. Richard Goldman
Richard N. Goldman (April 16, 1920 – November 29, 2010) was an American billionaire philanthropist who was the co-founder of the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1990 with his wife, Rhoda Haas Goldman, an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune. He founded the insurance company Goldman Insurance and Risk Management, and with his wife he established the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund in 1951. The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life (formerly the Judah L. Magnes Museum) is an extensive collection of Jewish history, art, and culture at the University of California, Berkeley. The Magnes Collection comprises more than 30,000 Jewish artifacts and manuscripts, the third largest collection of its kind in the United States. The holdings of The Magnes Collection are catalogued into three distinct areas, which together constitute the single collection: the Archives, the Library, and the Museum. Max Lilienthal
Max Lilienthal (November 6, 1815 – April 6, 1882) was a German-born adviser for the reform of Jewish schools in Russia and later a rabbi and proponent of Reform Judaism in the United States. Life and religion Work for Russian Government Lilienthal held a doctorate from the University of Munich when Ludwig Philippson recommended him to head a school inspired by the Enlightenment in Riga, then a part of the Russian Empire. He arrived in Riga in 1840. He made a greater impact with the Minister of National Education, Sergey Uvarov, than he did with the school. The next year, Uvarov summoned Lilienthal to serve as the Ministry of National Education's "learned Jew." Lilienthal's most important task was to convince the Jews of the importance of enlightened education. Louis Sloss
Louis Sloss Sr. (July 13, 1823 – 1902) was an American businessman who co-founded the Alaska Commercial Company. Biography Sloss was born in 1823 to a Jewish family in Untereisenheim, Kingdom of Bavaria. In 1845, he immigrated to the United States first settling in Kentucky and then Nevada City, California in 1849 during the California Gold Rush. He opened a general merchandise store with partners Dr. Richard H. McDonald and C.H. Swift (who traveled with him from Kentucky) in Sacramento, California that sold all types of goods for new arrivals including horses, mules, wagons, tents, and mining equipment. Sloss and McDonald, then partnered with Simon Greenwald and Lewis Gerstle, and opened a wholesale grocery firm. Simon Koshland
Simon Koshland (1825–1896) was a Bavarian-born American businessman, and wool merchant. He is the patriarch of the Koshland and Haas family of San Francisco.The Jews of San Francisco, by Martin A. Abraham Haas
Abraham Haas (1847 – August 8, 1921) was an American businessman, co-founder of Hellman, Haas & Co. (later Haas, Baruch & Co., which ultimately merged with Smart & Final), and patriarch of the Haas family, the primary shareholders of Levi Strauss & Co. Biography Haas was born to a Jewish family in Reckendorf, Kingdom of Bavaria in 1847 and immigrated to Portland, Oregon at the age of 16 where he worked at a grocery store founded by his cousins, Charles, Samuel, and Kalman Haas. Alfred Henry Jacobs
Alfred Henry Jacobs (1882 – December 14, 1954) was an American architect. He designed theaters, hotels, residential, and religious buildings, primarily working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Three of the buildings he designed are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He also worked as a watercolorist. Early life and education Alfred Henry Jacobs was born in 1882 in San Francisco, California to Julius and Sarah Adler Jacobs.
