Western Iowa Conference
The Western Iowa Conference is a high school athletic conference made up of bigger 1A and smaller 2A schools located mostly in the greater Council Bluffs area. The teams in the conference have a deep-rooted history together. Most of the schools have been with the conference throughout its history. History The Western Iowa Conference was organized in 1972 through the merger of the former Tri-County and Southwest Iowa Conferences. Members of the Tri-County Conference at that time were Carson–Macedonia, Elk Horn–Kimballton, Iowa School for the Deaf, Shelby-Tennant, Treynor, Tri-Center (Neola), Underwood, and Walnut. The members of the Southwest Iowa Conference then were AvoHa (Avoca), Griswold, Missouri Valley, and Oakland. Missouri Valley High School
Missouri Valley High School is a public, co-educational high school of Missouri Valley Community School District, and serves grades nine through twelve. Missouri Valley High School is in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Missouri Valley's mascot is the Big Reds, and the school uses the colors red and white. The mascot most recently used has been an arrowhead, but is recently under debate. It was established in 1976. Academics Missouri Valley High School has about a 15:1 student / teacher ratio. There are about 300 students enrolled in Missouri Valley High. Missouri Valley High's students took the Iowa Tests for Educational Development ( ITED). Underwood, Iowa
Underwood is a town in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. The population was 954 at the time of the 2020 census. History Underwood is located in Norwalk Township, so the early history of the township is also of the town. The historical information provided here was taken from a book on Pottawattamie County's past. The principal early settlers of the area arrived during the period from 1845 to 1850. In 1847, a flour mill and a saw mill were built on Mosquito Creek, southwest of the present site of Underwood. In 1850, the flour mill was destroyed by a flood. The first school was built in 1863, and soon more homes were built near the school and saw mill. It became known as Downsville. A post office was established there. With the coming of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1869, the town of Underwood was established three miles northeast of Downsville, which was later abandoned and has entirely disappeared (with the exception of a cemetery). Underwood Community School District
The Underwood Community School District is a rural public school district located in Underwood, Iowa. The first school in the district was built in 1863, in Downsville, IA. The school was moved to Underwood, IA in 1903 following the incorporation of the town and subsequent abandonment of Downsville. In 1926, the high school was founded. The district headquarters are in the elementary-middle school, while the high school is a separate building. The district, entirely in Pottawattamie County, serves Underwood and McClelland. The school mascot is the eagles and the colors are royal blue and white. Tri-Center High School
Tri-Center High School is a rural public high school near Neola, Iowa. It is part of the Tri-Center Community School District. The school was established in 1962. The school's mascot is the Trojan and the school's colors are yellow and black. General Tri-Center is a member of the Western Iowa Conference in all of their sports. The high school and elementary campus is located on I-880; northeast of Council Bluffs, and west from Des Moines. Treynor is a city in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,032 as of the 2020 census. History Treynor began east of Council Bluffs, IA in the late 1880s with the establishment of Fritz Eyberg's General Store, August Olderog's dance hall and saloon, and St Paul's German Evangelical Church. The vicinity east of Middle Silver Creek had previously been known for its number of wolves. Local German immigrant farmers referred to the settlement as Four Corners or High Five, a popular card name, until the post office opened in the early 1890s as Treynor, named after the recently deceased Council Bluffs postmaster. By the time the town was incorporated in 1905, it included two general stores, two saloons, a furniture/implement house, a livery stable, several blacksmith shops, and the Treynor State Bank. Missouri Valley, Iowa
Missouri Valley is a city in Harrison County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,678 at the time of the 2020 census. History Originally, Missouri Valley was known as St. John's (Findley or Old St. Johns), and established in 1856. This settlement was founded at the intersection of the Chicago & Northwestern, Sioux City & Pacific, and the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley lines. Following the collapse of wild cat banks in 1858 and the near completion of the railroad, the town was moved 1 mile from its original location and renamed "New St. Johns". The town was formally renamed a second time soon after, this time being named after the valley of the Missouri River.
