Western Canadian Triple Crown
The Western Canadian Triple Crown was established in 2023, and consists of three races across three Canadian tracks. It consists of the Manitoba Derby, the Canadian Derby, and the British Columbia Derby. Announced on May 9, 2023, the Western Canadian Triple Crown adds a bonus incentive of $100,000 CAD to any horse who can win all three races. The first iteration of the Western Canadian Triple Crown started with the Manitoba Derby on August 7, 2023 at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Mano Dura was the winner. The Manitoba Derby is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually at the beginning of August at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Established in 2023, it is the first jewel of the Western Canadian Triple Crown. Canadian Derby
The Canadian Derby is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually at the Century Mile Racetrack and Casino in Leduc County, Alberta. A Grade III event held in August, it is open to three-year-old horses and is raced on dirt over a distance of one mile and a quarter (10 furlongs). The race was the creation of future Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee R. James Speers and first run in 1930 at his Polo Park Racetrack in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Inaugurated as the Manitoba Stakes, it was restricted to Manitoba-bred horses until 1936 when the race was renamed the Manitoba Derby and made open to three-year-old horses bred in Canada. In 1941, the name was changed again to its present form as the Canadian Derby. In 1942, future Canadian and U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Johnny Longden won this race. British Columbia Derby
The British Columbia Derby is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually in September at Hastings Racecourse (formerly Exhibition Park) in Vancouver, British Columbia. Established in 2023, the British Columbia Derby is the third and final jewel of the Western Canadian Triple Crown. History Prior to 1961 (except for 1949 and 1956), the BC Derby was run at Lansdowne Park Racetrack in Richmond, British Columbia. The BC Derby was not run in 2020 or 2021 owing to factors relating to the Covid 19 pandemic. Assiniboia Downs
Assiniboia Downs is a Canadian horse race track on of land located in the Winnipeg suburb of St. James-Assiniboia. It is operated by the Manitoba Jockey Club and is the site of the annual Manitoba Derby. The track is located on the western edge of the city, near the intersection of the Perimeter Highway and Portage Avenue. It was opened on June 10, 1958, replacing the former Polo Park Racetrack, which was demolished to make way for Polo Park Shopping Centre. Thoroughbred racing season events run from May and end in September. Harness racing events operate during the winter months. Century Mile Racetrack and Casino is a casino and horse racing facility in Leduc County, Alberta, next to the Edmonton International Airport.
