West of Scotland Football Club is a rugby union club based in Milngavie, Scotland. Founded in 1865, West of Scotland are one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world, and one of the founding members of the Scottish Rugby Union. West have enjoyed a long and successful history, winning numerous Scottish Championships and producing an incredible number of international players, and a strong contingent of British and Irish Lions. During the 1960s and 1970s, West were a true powerhouse of British rugby – regularly fielding up to ten internationals. Milngavie
Milngavie ( ; ) is a town in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland and a suburb of Glasgow. It is on the Allander Water, at the northwestern edge of Greater Glasgow, and about from Glasgow city centre. It neighbours Bearsden. Milngavie is a commuter town, with much of its working population travelling to Glasgow to work or study. The town is served by Milngavie railway station on the North Clyde Line of the SPT rail network, which links it to Central Glasgow. In 2018, the Scottish Government published statistics for the town showing that the population increased to 13,537 in 6,062 households. David Shedden
David Shedden (24 May 1944 in Kilwinning – 27 October 2017 in Linwood) was a Scotland international rugby union footballer, who played on the wing. He died in October 2017 aged 73. Rugby Union career Amateur career Shedden went to Spier's School in Beith. His PE teacher was Campbell Bone, an enlightened and passionate rugby coach in Ayrshire. Leaving school Shedden then played for Old Spierians before moving on to West of Scotland. He was part of the West of Scotland team that won the 'unofficial' Scottish championship title in season 1970–71. His nickname was 'The Spear' due to his distinctive tackling style. Alastair McHarg (born 17 June 1944) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. Kelvinside-West is a former rugby union team that played their home games at Balgray Playing Fields, Glasgow, Scotland. Kelvinside-West was a short-lived rugby union club based on the merger of Kelvinside Academicals and West of Scotland. History The team was founded in 1945 after the Second World War in a bid to regroup and once again kick start rugby union in Glasgow. The main drivers of the merger were West of Scotland who found themselves out of a home after being evicted by the West of Scotland Cricket Club who played at Hamilton Crescent, their old ground. Scottish Unofficial Championship
The Scottish Unofficial Championship was the top league of Scotland's best amateur rugby union clubs. The Championship was 'unofficial' as the Scottish Rugby Union held that the sport should remain amateur and at the time did not sanction competitive games between the clubs. History Numerous forms of football were played in Scotland in the years prior to the introduction of the Rugby rules which were adopted for the boys of Edinburgh Academy in the early 1850s.
