West Maitland, New South Wales
Maitland () is a city in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia and the seat of Maitland City Council, situated on the Hunter River approximately by road north of Sydney and north-west of Newcastle. It is on the New England Highway approximately from its origin at Hexham. At the it had approximately 89,597 inhabitants, spread over an area of , with most of the population located in a strip along the New England Highway between the suburbs of Lochinvar and Thornton. The city centre is located on the right bank of the Hunter River, protected from moderate potential flooding by a levee. Maitland Court House
Maitland Court House is a heritage-listed courthouse at High Street, Maitland, New South Wales, Maitland, City of Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1895–96. The property is owned by the Department of Justice (New South Wales), Department of Justice. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The Maitland Court House was built in 1895–96 to the designs of New South Wales Government Architect, Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon at a cost of £11,700. James Mudie
James Mudie (1779–1852) was a Scottish-born free settler of Australia who became an officer of marines, large landowner, and author. He was the son of John and Margaret Mudie of Forfarshire, Scotland. Life in the military Mudie's life in the military properly began in 1799, when he was appointed second lieutenant in the 69th company of the Royal Marines at Portsmouth, England. He was a second lieutenant for six years before promotion to first lieutenant in 1805. During those six years, he served on St. Marcouf Island in the English Channel (1800–1802), and aboard (1803–1804). After being promoted, Mudie was sent on recruiting service in Scotland where he was placed on half-pay after he got into trouble for reasons which were not clearly specified. Molly Morgan
Molly Morgan (baptised 31 January 1762 – 27 June 1835) was an English landowner, farmer, and convict. She was born as Mary Jones in Ludlow, Shropshire, England, and stayed there throughout her childhood and early adulthood, marrying William Morgan on 25 June 1785 and having two children with him. In 1789, hempen yarn stolen from a factory was discovered at the Morgans' house, resulting in the couple being sentenced to penal transportation. Although William was able to escape initially, Molly was transported to New South Wales as a convict with the Second Fleet on the ''Neptune'', and William was eventually caught and transported as well. After working together for a while in Australia, William left Molly due to her flirting with other men. In 1794, Molly Morgan was able to escape back to England aboard the ''Resolution'' by becoming Captain John Locke's mistress. James Wallis (British Army Officer)
Major James Wallis (11 October 1785 – 12 July 1858) was an Anglo-Irish military officer who served in the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, 46th Regiment of Foot. Wallis saw service in Dominica, Colony of New South Wales, New South Wales, and Company rule in India, India. During his deployment in New South Wales, he commanded a detachment of grenadiers which committed the Appin Massacre of 1816, and was later promoted to the post of Commandant at the convict settlement of Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle from 1816 to 1818. Wallis is also noted for producing a number of historically significant sketches and paintings during his colonial military career. Wonnarua
The Wonnarua people, otherwise written Wanarruwa, are a group of Aboriginal Australian people united by strong ties of kinship, and who survived in family groups or clans scattered along the inland area of what is now known as the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia. Their creation spirit is ''Baiami'', also known as ''Koin'', the creator of all things and the ''Keeper of the Valley''. Language The origin of the Wonnarua language is unclear; however, linguists group closely related dialects together under the description "language of the Hunter River/Lake Macquarie" (HRLM). That term denotes the geographical location of the closely related dialects rather than the name of the language group.
