West Chester And Philadelphia Railroad
The West Chester & Philadelphia Railroad (WC&P) operated in the greater Philadelphia area from 1848 to 1881. It became the West Chester Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). It has been operated as the Media/Wawa Line on the SEPTA system since 2022. It was known as the Media-Elwyn Line from 1983-2022. History Construction The West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1848, and the company was organized in 1851. Construction began in Philadelphia in 1852, and the road reached Kellyville (now Gladstone) in November 1853, and Media by November 1854. In July 1855, at least one worker died in a construction accident and costs mounted due to construction of numerous bridges. Financial difficulties followed, and work was suspended until 1856, when the line opened to Grubb's Bridge (now Wawa). The remaining line to West Chester was completed by November 1858. Wawa Station
Wawa Station is a commuter rail station on the SEPTA Regional Rail Media/Wawa Line, located adjacent to U.S. Route 1 in Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The original station was built by the West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad and later served the Pennsylvania Railroad's West Chester Branch, which finally became SEPTA's R3 line (later renamed to the "Media/Elwyn Line"). The outer section of the line, running from Elwyn to West Chester including the old Wawa station, was closed in 1986. Chester Creek Branch
The Chester Creek Branch was a railroad line that operated in southern Delaware County, Pennsylvania, from 1869 to 1972. Built by the Chester Creek Railroad, it was originally operated and leased by the Philadelphia and Baltimore Central Railroad, then by a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and finally, for a few years, by PRR successor Penn Central. It connected the Lamokin Street station in Chester to Lenni station in Middletown Township. The branch diverged from the Northeast Corridor main line near SEPTA's now-defunct Lamokin Street station. The West Chester Railroad is a privately owned and operated Heritage railway, tourist railroad that runs between Market Street in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Chester County, and the village of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Delaware County.
