Wenvoe () is a village, Community (Wales), community and electoral ward between Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Barry and Cardiff in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. Nearby are the Wenvoe Transmitter near Twyn-yr-Odyn and the site of the former HTV Wales Television Centre at Culverhouse Cross which is now a housing estate. It is home to the Wenvoe Quarry and Wenvoe Castle Golf Club. History Maintaining a thriving farming community for centuries, Wenvoe, while still a farming village to an extent, has doubled in population in the last hundred years due to new housing developments. The village originally developed around the parish church of St. Mary, which can be traced back to the twelfth century with the adjacent locality now being a conservation area. Wenvoe Transmitter
The Wenvoe transmitting station, officially known as Arqiva Wenvoe, is the main facility for broadcasting and telecommunications for Cardiff and South Wales. It is situated close to the village of Wenvoe in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, in the United Kingdom, UK. It comprises a guyed mast with Antenna (radio), antennas attached at various heights. The average height above sea level is for the television antennas. It is owned and operated by Arqiva. The site serves an estimated 1.5m listeners (0.63m households) in the South West of England, and 1.3m listeners (0.54m households) in Wales. History The original mast at the site was built in 1952 by the BBC to provide 405-line VHF television to south Wales and the west of England. Wenvoe Quarry
Wenvoe Quarry is a quarry located on the eastern edge of the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales, approximately southwest of Cardiff city centre. It is situated on Alps Quarry Road, in an area known as "The Alps", between Wenvoe, Culverhouse Cross and Caerau, Cardiff, Caerau. The quarry is accessed from the A4050 road. Wenvoe Quarry was developed from the Alps Quarry. The now-closed Whitehall Quarry, located to the west, was also known as Wenvoe Quarry. Current status Wenvoe Quarry is managed by Breedon Group, and the mineral rights are owned by the Wenvoe Castle Estate. The quarry has not been in production since the end of 2023. Wenvoe Castle
Wenvoe Castle was a castle and country estate between Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Barry and Wenvoe, in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales. Today the former estate forms the Wenvoe Castle Golf Club. Goldsland lies on its western boundary. History In the later medieval periods, Wenvoe is recorded as having belonged to three families: De Sully, Le Fleming baronets, le Fleming and Malefaunt. However, according to Clifford Spurgeon, it wasn't until the late 1530s that a castle at Wenvoe was mentioned, when it appeared in John Leland (antiquary)#Editions of Leland's works, Leland's Itinerary. After being escheated to the crown, it belonged successively to the Thomas, Birt and Jenner families. Wrinstone
Wrinstone or Wrinston () is a medieval hamlet, just east of Wenvoe, Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales. The Wrinstone estate was variously also known as Wrenston, Wrencheston or Wrenchester. The Barry Railway line ran past the hamlet and entered the Wenvoe Tunnel just to the north near Wenvoe Quarry. It closed after a fire in 1963. History A manor was held here from the early Norman period, and at various points the lords of Wrinstone Manor were in control of the nearby Cwrt-yr-Ala estate and property. Walter of Gloucester was known to have held Wrinstone in the mid 13th century, but by 1262 it was held by Walter de Reigny, who also held the nearby manor of Michaelston-le-Pit. Wenvoe Castle Golf Club
Wenvoe Castle Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course near Barry and Wenvoe in the Vale of Glamorgan off the A4050 road, situated to the south of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Culverhouse Cross () is a district straddling the boundary between Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, in the Community (Wales), community of Wenvoe. The district is centred on a major traffic roundabout that links West Cardiff to the M4 motorway and is home to a number of different retail outlets, and formerly ITV Wales's headquarters. History According to place-name etymologist Deric Meidrum John, there has been a crossroads at Culverhouse Cross for some centuries, originally at the intersection of the Cardiff to Cowbridge turnpike and the road between the parishes of St Fagans and Wenvoe. Mary Immaculate High School () is an 11-16 mixed, English-medium, Roman Catholic, comprehensive and faith school located in Wenvoe, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, although administrated by the Cardiff local education authority. History The school was founded in 1963 as Archbishop Mostyn Secondary Modern School, which later merged with, what was then, Cyntwell Boys' School. In 1987 Roman Catholic education was reorganised in the Archdiocese of Cardiff, which saw all secondary schools lose their post-16 education facilities in favour of one united tertiary college, St David's.
