Wentworth Cavenagh–Mainwaring
Wentworth Cavenagh (1821 – 5 January 1895), also known as Wentworth Cavenagh–Mainwaring, was an Australian politician. Cavenagh was member for Yatala in the South Australian House of Assembly from 17 November 1862 to 24 April 1881; and was Commissioner of Crown Lands, under Henry Strangways, from 3 November 1868 to 30 May 1870, and Commissioner of Public Works in the Henry Ayers Government from 4 March 1872 to 22 July 1873. In 1887, he received permission to bear the title of Honourable. Edward McEllister
Edward McEllister (c. 1809 – 12 May 1866) was a politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. History McEllister emigrated from Ireland, perhaps County Tipperary arriving in December 1839 aboard ''Delhi'' and served as a mounted policeman stationed for a time at Port Lincoln, then some time before 1845 took up business in Rundle Street, Adelaide, which proved lucrative, and he retired in 1850. McEllister was a member of the Legislative Assembly for the district of Yatala from March 1860 to November 1862. He failed to be re-elected due to his support for compulsory Bible studies in State schools. David Murray (28 December 1829 – 6 January 1907) was a politician in South Australia. Early life David Murray was born on 28 December 1829 in Anstruther, Fife, Scotland, a son of William Murray. He and his brother William Mackintosh Murray (c. 1831 – 25 November 1920) had some experience in the retail and wholesale drapery trade, which included supplying retailers in the young colony of South Australia. Thomas Cowan (South Australian Politician)
Thomas Cowan (5 December 1839 – 14 September 1890) served one term as a member of the South Australian House of Assembly for the Electoral district of Yatala. Early life Cowan who was born in County Tyrone, Ireland (now Northern Ireland), was the eldest son of John Cowan, a ploughman and shepherd, and his wife Margaret, née Lammey. Cowan, his parents and four younger siblings emigrated to South Australia, arriving in Adelaide on 3 August 1852. The family initially settled in North Adelaide where Cowan assisted his father with a horse-drawn taxi business operating between North Adelaide and Adelaide. His father later purchased property at Two Wells (39 km north of Adelaide) where Cowan assisted with the operation of several businesses including a farm, a tavern and a post office. Lavington Glyde
Lavington Glyde (24 April 1823 – 31 July 1890) was a Treasurer of South Australia. Glyde was born on 24 April 1823 in Exeter, Devon. England, and emigrated to South Australia in 1847. Ten years later he entered the South Australian Legislative Assembly, in which he sat in every parliament from the first to the tenth inclusive. From 1857 to 1860 he represented East Torrens, from March 1860 to May 1875 Yatala, and from May 1877 to April 1884 Victoria. He was Treasurer in the Francis Dutton Ministry in July 1863, and Minister of Lands on four occasions: from July 1863, to July 1864, October to November 1865, May 1867 to September 1868, and October to November 1868, in the first Henry Ayers, the first John Hart, and the fourth and fifth Ayers Ministries respectively. Hon. Henry Edward Bright (30 June 1819 – 18 February 1904) was a member of the South Australian Colonial Parliament. A son, Henry Edward Bright jr. (1843–1917), was a mayor of Gawler, South Australia. Early life Bright was born in London on 30 June 1819, the son of Edward Bright and Mary Ann. He, his wife Jane Prudence (née King) and son Henry Edward Bright jr. arrived in Adelaide in April 1850. Yatala is a former electorate of the South Australian House of Assembly located within the cadastral Hundred of Yatala. It was one of the original Assembly districts in 1857, abolished in 1902. The Commissioner of Public Works was a member of Cabinet of the Government of South Australia. Originally created for the Finniss Ministry on 24 October 1856, there were 63 holders of the public works portfolio. It was known as Commissioner for Public Works for most of its existence, however since the Playford Government in the 1960s, it was known as Minister for Works or Public Works. James Garden Ramsay
John James Garden Ramsay (1827 – 17 January 1890)was an industrialist and politician in colonial South Australia. Biography Personal life Ramsay was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the St. Rollox Ironworks in Glasgow, and came to South Australia in 1857, establishing four years later at Mount Barker an agricultural implement and machine manufactory, which represented the starting point of what later grew into the largest business of its kind in the colony. Career Ramsay represented Mount Barker in the South Australian Legislative Assembly from 5 April 1870 (along with John Cheriton), and on 7 July 1880 was elected to the South Australian Legislative Council, for which he sat until of his death.
