Wendler (coachbuilder)
Wendler was a German wheelwright and car body manufacturer in Reutlingen. History The company was opened by ''Erhard Wendler'' in 1840 as a carriage factory. Initially, he manufactured carriages, and from the early 1920s, car bodies as well. The designer ''Helmut Schwandner'' initiated the reorientation. In the 1920s, around 60 bodies were built, and in the 1930s there were 250 to 270. The workforce consisted of around 100 employees. One of the customers in 1937 was the architect Wilhelm Ritter von Graf. After the Second World War, Wendler resumed the production of car bodies, which were now built in the Ponton (car), ponton shape. Series production continued until the end of the 1950s, then the focus shifted mainly to repairs. One of Wendler's most important clients was Porsche, who, among other things, had Wendler build 90 light-alloy bodies (according to other sources, more than 100) for the Porsche 550. A coachbuilder manufactures bodies for passenger-carrying vehicles. The trade of producing coachwork began with bodies for horse-drawn vehicles. Today it includes custom automobiles, buses, Coach (bus), motor coaches, and passenger car (rail), railway carriages. The word "coach" was derived from the Hungarian town of Kocs. A vehicle body constructed by a coachbuilder may be called a "coachbuilt body" (British English) or "custom body" (American English), and is not to be confused with a custom car. A wheelwright is a Artisan, craftsman who builds or repairs wooden wheels. The word is the combination of "wheel" and the word "wright" (which comes from the Old English word "''wryhta''", meaning a worker - as also in shipbuilding, shipwright and arkwright). Reutlingen (; ) is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is the capital of the eponymous Reutlingen (district), district of Reutlingen. As of June 2018, it had an estimated population of 116,456. The Porsche 550 is a racing sports car produced by Porsche from 1953 until 1956. In that time only 90 Porsche 550s were produced, and they quickly established dominance in the 1.1- and 1.5- liter classes. The 1961 24 Hours of Le Mans was a motor race for Sports car racing, Sports cars and Grand tourer, Grand Touring cars staged at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France on 10 and 11 June 1961. It was the 29th Grand Prix of Endurance and the fourth race of the 1961 World Sportscar Championship. Ferrari and Maserati were the main contenders, with Aston Martin an outside chance. Gutbrod Superior
The Gutbrod Superior is a small car, built from 1950 until 1954 by German manufacturer Gutbrod. A total of 6,860 cabriolet saloons and 866 estates were built in less than four years. History In November 1949, a pilot series of the cabriolet saloon Superior 600 was built in Plochingen, and in July 1950, the regular series production began at the Calw division. The standard model was offered until April 1954. At the 1950 Frankfurt Spring Fair, the cabriolet was presented; the public, however, did not show much interest. The "Superior-Sport", an expensive roadster with a Wendler body, was also less successful, despite being offered at a price of less than DM 8000. In 1951/52, only twelve units were built. Bentley S2
The Bentley S2 is a luxury car produced by Bentley from 1959 until 1962. The successor to the S1, it featured the new Rolls-Royce–Bentley L-series V8 engine and improved air conditioning made possible by that engine's increased output. Power steering was also standard, and a new dashboard and steering wheel were introduced. Some early S2s were built with the earlier S1 dashboard.
