Chilean Spanish
Chilean Spanish ( or ) is any of several varieties of the Spanish language spoken in most of Chile. Chilean Spanish dialects have distinctive pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and slang usages that differ from those of Standard Spanish, with various linguists identifying Chilean Spanish as one of the most divergent varieties of Spanish. The Royal Spanish Academy recognizes 2,214 words and idioms exclusively or mainly produced in Chilean Spanish, in addition to many still unrecognized slang expressions. Formal Spanish in Chile has recently incorporated an increasing number of colloquial elements. The Miguel de Cervantes Prize () is awarded annually to honour the lifetime achievement of an outstanding writer in the Spanish language. The ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' calls it "most prestigious and remunerative award given for Spanish-language literature". Jorge Edwards Valdés (29 June 1931 – 17 March 2023) was a Chilean novelist, journalist and diplomat. He was the Chilean ambassador to France during the first Sebastián Piñera presidency. Life and career Edwards attended law school at the Universidad de Chile. During the presidency of Salvador Allende, Edwards reopened the Chilean embassy in Havana,Cuba, but only three months later, he decided to leave the island. From this episode he wrote what is perhaps his most famous work, ''Persona non grata'' (1971), which made him world famous, in which he criticized the Cuban government. Agustín Iván Edmundo Edwards Eastman (24 November 1927 – 24 April 2017) was a Chilean newspaper publisher, and one of the richest people in Chile. He inherited his family's newspaper company El Mercurio SAP, which publishes Chile's leading national dailies ''El Mercurio'' and ''La Segunda'' among others, when his father died in 1956. He has been described as a media baron, and is known for his right-wing views. María Edwards de Errázuriz (née María Edwards McClure or María Errázuriz; 11 December 1893 – 8 June 1972) was a Chilean social worker and Catholic nurse who was honored in November 2005 at Israel's Yad Vashem memorial (the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority) as one of the "Righteous Among The Nations," for her participation during the Holocaust in helping to save Jewish children in France. Joaquín Edwards Bello (; 10 May 1887–19 February 19 1968) was a Chilean writer and journalist of British descent. Life Joaquín Edwards Bello was born on the 10 May 1887, in Valparaíso to Ana Luisa Bello Rozas and Joaquín Edwards Garriga. Edwards studied at The Mackay School and later at the . To complete his education, his family decided in 1904 to send him to Europe. Edwards' first novel, ''El inútil'' (''The Useless One'' would be the translation), generated such reactions in Santiago that he emigrated to Brazil for some time.
