Welland Phipps
Welland Wilfred "Weldy" "Angayuroluk" Phipps (July 23, 1922 – October 22, 1996) was a Canadian military pilot and prisoner of war during World War II, a pioneer bush pilot, inventor and a territorial level politician. World War II Phipps joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a fighter pilot in World War II. He was shot down and became a Prisoner of War for 2 years. He succeeded in making an escape from his POW Camp. Aviation Phipps moved to the Northwest Territories after returning home from the war. In 1953 and founded a business called Atlas Aviation, based in Resolute Bay. He invented a new type of balloon tundra tire that allows an aircraft to land safely on tundra. The type of tire is known as the ''Weldy Special''. Atlas Aviation introduced the first regular scheduled airline service to Canada's most northern communities. Ludy Pudluk
Ludy Pudluk (January 31, 1943 – July 1, 2019) was a Canadian territorial level politician and cabinet minister. A climate change activist, he resided in Resolute, Nunavut. Life Pudluk was born on January 31, 1943, Qaumarjuiton in Navy Board Inlet, near Pond Inlet. In 1958, the family moved to Resolute, Nunavut, at the time part of the Northwest Territories, where he remained. In 2008, he appeared before the Qikiqtani Truth Commission to give testimony about the sled dog killing by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Pudluk was made a member of the Order of Nunavut in 2017. He died July 1, 2019 in Iqaluit. Political career Pudluk was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 1975 Northwest Territories general election winning the High Arctic electoral district. Trans-Canada Trophy
The Trans-Canada Trophy, also known as the McKee Trophy, is awarded by the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute to a Canadian citizen who has made an outstanding, contemporary achievement in aerospace operations, whether a single act within the year prior to the award or a sustained level of performance over a period of several years.
