Weiterstadt Prison Bombing
The Weiterstadt prison bombing occurred on 27 March 1993, when the Red Army Faction (RAF) ''Command Katharina Hammerschmidt'' bombed and destroyed a newly built prison in Weiterstadt, near Frankfurt am Main in Germany. It was the RAF's "last anticapitalist attack" before it dissolved. Nobody was harmed in the explosion of the empty prison. Estimates of damage varied widely. Perpetrators were linked 14 years later through DNA evidence in skimasks left behind. In February 2024 Daniela Klette, one of the 4 perpetrators was arrested. Description On 27 March 1993, at least three armed and masked men and a woman climbed the 6m high wall of the newly built prison in Weiterstadt, using a rope ladder, entering the guardhouse around 1 am. The terrorists tied and abducted the 10 guards and locked them in a van near a landfill. They identified themselves as RAF`s ''Command Katharina Hammerschmidt'' to the guards. Daniela Klette
Daniela Marie Luise Klette (born 5 November 1958) is a German left-wing militant. She is a suspected former German terrorist associated with the third generation Red Army Faction (RAF). She went underground in the 1990s and was arrested in February 2024. Early life Daniela Marie Luise Klette was born on 5 November 1958 in Karlsruhe, West Germany. Activism Klette was active in left-wing groups from 1975 onward. These groups included the Anti-NATO movement and initiatives against the construction of Runway 18 West at Frankfurt Airport. Klette is an alleged member of the third generation Red Army Faction active during the 1980s and 1990s. Klette is suspect in the 1991 United States embassy sniper attack in Bonn and the 1993 explosives attack against Weiterstadt prison under construction in the state of Hesse. Katharina Hammerschmidt
Katharina Hammerschmidt (14 December 1943 – 29 July 1975) was a German student of pedagogics and sympathizer of the first generation of Red Army Faction (RAF). She died in 1975 due to throat cancer, which was treated far too late in a West German state prison. When the RAF disbanded in 1998, they remembered Hammerschmidt as one of its victims. Early life and education Katharina Hammerschmidt was born in Gdańsk in 1943. She studied pedagogics. Career In 1970 she got in touch with the RAF through her friend Gudrun Ensslin. Hammerschmidt was suspected of having transported weapons packages as a courier and of having rented apartments for the group. Police filed a warrant against her and Hammerschmidt flew from West Germany to France. Upon the advice by her lawyer Otto Schily, she returned to West Germany and turned herself in to the police on 29 June 1970. 1991 United States Embassy Sniper Attack
On February 13, 1991, three members of the Red Army Faction (RAF) fired about 250 rounds using a military rifle at the United States embassy in Bonn, Germany. The suspects fired at the embassy from a distance of about 500 metres from Villa Von-Weiß-Straße 8, located across the Rhine river in Königswinter. The incident was linked to the ongoing Gulf War. In a note left at the scene, the RAF said the attack was done to combat American imperialism and to get it out of Iraq. The attackers escaped their positions in a stolen Volkswagen Passat car and were never caught. The embassy received some bullet holes and broken windows, but no major damage was caused. The same G1 rifle was used by the RAF in the killing of Detlev Karsten Rohwedder afterwards. The Red Army Faction (RAF) existed in West Germany from 1970 to 1998, committing numerous crimes, especially in the autumn of 1977, which led to a national crisis that became known as the " German Autumn". The RAF was founded in 1970 by Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Ulrike Meinhof, Horst Mahler, and others. The first generation of the organization was commonly referred to by the press and the government as the "Baader-Meinhof Gang", a name the group did not use to refer to itself.
