Weimar Princely Free Zeichenschule
The Weimar Princely Free Drawing School () was an art and literature educational establishment. It was set up in 1776 in Weimar by the scholar and ducal private-secretary Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) and the painter Georg Melchior Kraus (1737–1806), as part of Weimar Classicism. It was financed by the young Charles Augustus, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and heavily promoted by Goethe, who also taught there. Among its pupils were Charles Augustus's future mistress Karoline Jagemann. It lasted until 1930. As Weimar's Geheimer Rat had oversight over the school from 1788 to 1832, it is not to be confused with the (set up in 1860), the original version of the Weimarer Kunsthochschule. Corona Elisabeth Wilhelmine Schröter (14 January 1751 – 23 August 1802) was a Germans, German actress and musician best known as a singer. She also composed songs, setting texts by Friedrich Schiller and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to music.Grove Early life Schröter was born in Guben, Holy Roman Empire. In her early years she studied many instruments, which included the keyboard instrument, keyboard and guitar. Charlotte Von Stein
Charlotte Albertine Ernestine von Stein (alternatively Charlotta Ernestina Bernadina von Stein; née von Schardt; 25 December 1742 – 6 January 1827) was a German lady-in-waiting at the court in Weimar and a close friend to both Friedrich Schiller and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose work and life were influenced by her. Ferdinand Jagemann
Ferdinand Jagemann (24 August 1780, Weimar – 9 January 1820, Weimar) was a German painter; known primarily for his portraits. Life He was the son of Christian Joseph Jagemann, the librarian for Duchess Anna Amalia of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. His sister, the actress Karoline Jagemann, became the mistress of Karl August, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, who helped him begin his artistic studies with Johann Heinrich Tischbein. He later worked with the court painter, Georg Melchior Kraus and Heinrich Friedrich Füger in Vienna. From 1802 to 1804, he was in Paris, where he may have studied with Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Regnault. He then returned to Weimar and became a portrait painter. Konrad Horny
Johann Konrad Horny (November 1764, Mainz – 7 November 1807, Weimar) was a German painter, graphic artist, and copper engraver. Life and work Until 1784, he was a landscape artist at the . After 1785, he lived in Weimar where, in 1789, he became a teacher at the Princely Free Drawing School. In 1793, he accompanied Goethe back to his hometown, then known as the Republic of Mainz, to witness a siege there, maintained by the French Army. Martin Gottlieb Klauer (29 August 1742, Rudolstadt - 4 April 1801, Weimar) was a German sculptor, and one of the first teachers at the Weimar Princely Free Drawing School. Life and work His father, Johann Michael Klauer, was a tailor. He learned his trade in his hometown, from the Court Sculptor, . He probably worked in Gera and Potsdam. Sixtus Armin Thon
Sixtus Armin Thon (10 November 1817, Eisenach – 26 September 1901, Weimar) was a German painter, etcher and lithographer. There is widespread disagreement over whether his name was Sixtus or Sixt, even though his gravestone says "Sixtus". Life and work He was born in Eisenach, the son of naturalist and mineralogist Theodor Thon, who was also an amateur engraver. Friedrich Preller The Elder
Friedrich Preller the Elder (25 April 1804 in Eisenach – 23 April 1878 in Weimar) was a German landscape painter and etcher. From 1832 he was a professor at the Fürstlichen freien Zeichenschule in Weimar. He was the father of the artist Friedrich Preller the Younger. Life He was born at Eisenach. After studying drawing at Weimar, he went in 1821, on Goethe's advice, to Dresden, where in 1824 he was invited to accompany the grand duke of Weimar to Belgium.
