Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1992. Since 2001, the band has consisted of Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Patrick Wilson (drums, backing vocals), Brian Bell (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Scott Shriner (bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals). They have sold 10 million albums in the United States and more than 35 million worldwide. After signing to Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer released their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, also known as the Blue Album, in May 1994. Backed by music videos for the singles " Undone – The Sweater Song", " Buddy Holly", and " Say It Ain't So", the Blue Album became a multi-platinum success. ''Weezer'' (commonly known as the ''Blue Album'') is the debut studio album by the American rock band Weezer, released on May 10, 1994, by DGC Records. It was produced by Ric Ocasek of the Cars. Weezer formed in Los Angeles in 1992, and initially struggled to engage audiences, who were more interested in grunge. The band recorded a demo, ''The Kitchen Tape'', which brought them to the attention of DGC owner Geffen Records. Weezer selected Ocasek to produce because of his work with the Cars. Most of the album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City between August and September 1993. The group treated the guitars and bass as a single, 10-string instrument, playing in unison. Rivers Cuomo
Rivers Cuomo ( ; born June 13, 1970) is an American musician best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band Weezer. Cuomo was born in New York City and raised in several Buddhist communities in the northeastern U.S. until the age of 10 when his family settled in Connecticut. He played in several bands in Connecticut and California before forming Weezer in 1992. After the success of Weezer's debut, the ''Blue Album'' (1994)'','' Cuomo enrolled at Harvard University, but dropped out after recording Weezer's second album, ''Pinkerton'' (1996). He later re-enrolled and graduated in 2006. Brian Bell
Brian Lane Bell (born December 9, 1968) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist, keyboardist, backing vocalist, and occasional lead vocalist of the Rock music, rock band Weezer, with whom he has recorded fifteen studio albums. Bell also fronted the rock band The Relationship and was the lead vocalist and guitarist of the indie rock band Space Twins. Moving to Los Angeles at the age of eighteen, Bell played bass guitar in the band Carnival Art, releasing three studio albums with the band before departing in 1993. Bell subsequently joined Weezer as its rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist, at the request of band member Matt Sharp. Undone – The Sweater Song
"Undone – The Sweater Song" is a song by American alternative rock band Weezer, released in June 1994 from their self-titled debut album as their debut single. Background The band originally intended to insert various sound clips into ''Undone'', but were wary of the cost of licensing them. Instead, the studio version of the track features a spoken introduction by bassist Matt Sharp and Karl Koch, a longtime friend of the band. The track also features dialogue between Koch and Mykel Allan, an early supporter of the band. This dialogue is frequently ad-libbed during concerts and other live recordings. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has commented on the song, saying: Cuomo has also said that it was his attempt at writing "a Velvet Underground-type song," but he later called the song an inadvertent derivative of Metallica's " Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", with the band's metal roots showing through. Scott Shriner
Scott Gardner Shriner (born July 11, 1965) is an American musician best known as a member of the rock band Weezer, with whom he has recorded twelve studio albums. Joining the band in 2001, Shriner is the band's longest serving bass guitarist. Prior to his musical career, Shriner was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. At the age of twenty-five, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a career in music, attending the Musicians Institute. Shriner subsequently performed with multiple independent acts, and toured as a member of Vanilla Ice's backing band, in support of the rapper's nu metal album '' Hard to Swallow.'' In 2001, Shriner joined Weezer on a provisional basis, following the sudden departure of bass guitarist Mikey Welsh, who had left the band for personal reasons. Mikey Welsh
Michael Edward Welsh (April 20, 1971 – October 8, 2011) was an American artist and musician who played bass for several bands, including the rock band Weezer. During Weezer's hiatus, he played with Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo in the band Homie, during Cuomo's time in Boston. Following original bassist Matt Sharp's departure from Weezer, Welsh joined as bassist and played with them from the time that they unofficially regrouped in 1998 until August 2001, when he experienced mental health problems. Shortly afterwards, he retired from music to focus on his painting career. Welsh died from a drug overdose on October 8, 2011. Career Welsh was born on April 20, 1971, in Syracuse, New York. Jason Rosanoff Cropper (born June 27, 1971) is an American musician. He was a founding member and the former guitarist of the American alternative rock band Weezer, prior to his firing before the release of their self-titled debut album. Biography Weezer Cropper was the original rhythm guitarist for Weezer, and as such was present at the band's first official band practice on February 14, 1992. He recorded on the band's first three official demo tapes prior to their signing to Geffen Records. During the recording of their debut album, ''Weezer'' (aka ''The Blue Album'') in 1993, Cropper learned that Amy Wellner, his girlfriend in Los Angeles, was pregnant. The ramifications of this news started affecting Cropper's personality and disrupting the band's working environment.
