Weelde Air Base
Weelde Air Base is a NATO reserve airfield located in Weelde, a village in the Ravels municipality in Belgium. It is operated by the Belgian Air Component that has no military flight operations at that location, besides aircraft arriving to be stored or leaving storage, for example retired F-16 aircraft. The Belgian Air Component also uses the airfield for the activities of the Belgian Air Cadets. History Weedle Air Base was originally constructed between 1952 and 1954 as part of an expansion of Belgian defenses after the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It was one of seven airfields that the Belgian Government elected to construct in the time frame, including Bertrix, Ursel, Saint-Hubert, Brecht, Saint-Vith and Bastogne, although the last two were never completed. Ravels () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises the towns of Poppel, Ravels proper and Weelde. In 2021, Ravels had a total population of 15,105. Kleine Brogel Air Base is a Belgian Air Component military airfield located east of Kleine-Brogel, in the municipality of Peer, Belgium. It is home to the Belgian 10th Tactical Wing, which operates F-16 Fighting Falcons. As part of nuclear sharing it is also the home of the United States Air Force's 701st List of United States Air Force munitions squadrons, Munitions Support Squadron. As of 2023, Kleine Brogel is one of six active air bases in five European countries with B61 nuclear bombs in underground Weapon Storage Security System (WS3), WS3 Weapon Storage and Security System inside aircraft shelters.
