The Count of Wedel-Jarlsberg (also ''Wedel Jarlsberg'') is a title of the Norwegian nobility and of the Danish nobility. The family of Wedel-Jarlsberg is a branch of the larger family von Wedel, which comes from Pomerania, Germany. Family members have had a significant position in the 18th and 19th centuries' Norwegian history. Feudal Count Johan Caspar Herman Wedel-Jarlsberg played in 1814 an active role in the constitutional assembly at Eidsvoll, and was the first native Norwegian to hold the post of Governor-general of Norway (representing the absent king as head of the Norwegian cabinet) during the union with Sweden. Peder Anker Wedel-Jarlsberg
Peder Anker, Count of Wedel-Jarlsberg (born 18 August 1875, died 13 October 1954) was a Norwegian courtier, military officer and estate owner. He served as Lord Chamberlain for King Haakon VII of Norway from 1931 to 1945 and was one of the King's closest confidants for over thirty years. In 1946 he succeeded his brother as head of the house of Wedel-Jarlsberg and feudal count (''lensgreve''), the highest rank of the Dano-Norwegian nobility and equivalent to Duke in other countries. Career He graduated as an officer in 1897 and became the King's adjutant in 1913. He was appointed Chamberlain in 1925 and Second Court Marshal in 1927. He became First Court Mashal and Lord Chamberlain in 1931. During the Second World War, he left the country with the royal family and accompanied Crown Princess Märtha to the United States. Jarlsberg was a former countship that forms a part of today's Vestfold county in Norway. The former countships of Jarlsberg and Larvik were merged into a county in 1821. Jarlsberg and Larvik's County (''Jarlsberg og Larviks amt'') were renamed Vestfold in 1919. Created in 1673 as Griffenfeldt Countship (''Griffenfeld grevskap''), it was after a few years known as Tønsberg Countship (''Tønsberg grevskap'') until 1684, when the name became Jarlsberg. The House of Wedel (or Wedell) is an old and distinguished German noble family, from Stormarn in what is now Schleswig-Holstein. The family members held the title of Prince, Count and Baron. Per Christian Cornelius Paus (born 28 April 1910 in Oslo, died 15 December 1986) was a Norwegian steel industrialist and lawyer. Background He was a member of the patrician Paus family and was a son of the steel industrialist Christopher Blom Paus and a grandson of the steel industrialist Ole Paus, who founded the Ole Paus steel company in 1872. ''Baron'' Frederik (Fritz) Hartvig Herman Wedel Jarlsberg (7 July 1855– 27 July 1942) was a Norwegian aristocrat, jurist and diplomat. Biography Fredrik Wedel Jarlsberg was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Baron Frederik Joachim Wedel Jarlsberg (1819–1880) and Baroness Juliane Wedel Jarlsberg (1818–1872). On both his father and mother side, he was a member of a branch of Norway's foremost nobility. He maintained the title of baron in Denmark, which had not abolished nobility titles following the separation of Denmark-Norway. Earlier in Norway, his family was officially recognised as barons.
