Water Forest (Xinghua)
The Water Forest () is a park in the north-west part of the city of Xinghua, in Jiangsu Province, eastern China. Tourists come to see dawn redwoods (''Metasequoia glyptostroboides'') trees, which are rooted in water, and give the park its name. The species is listed as critically endangered in the wild. Xinghua, Jiangsu
Xinghua () is a county-level city under the administration of Taizhou, Jiangsu province, China. It is located in the central part of Jiangsu Province. It borders the prefecture-level cities of Yancheng to the north and east and Yangzhou to the west. Xinghua's name () is the abbreviation for "" () which means "prospering (the Confucian) teaching". History In 920, the Yang Wu state of the Ten Kingdoms separated the northern part of the then Hailing county to establish Xinghua county. The county was downgraded to Zhaoyang township in 1135, but was restored in 1149. In 1987, the county was turned into a city of Yangzhou. The area was under the jurisdiction of Yangzhou until 1996, and then reassign to Taizhou, Jiangsu. Metasequoia Glyptostroboides
''Metasequoia glyptostroboides'', the dawn redwood, is a fast-growing, endangered deciduous conifer. It is the sole living species of the genus ''Metasequoia'', one of three genera in the subfamily Sequoioideae of the family Cupressaceae. It now survives only in wet lower slopes and montane river and stream valleys in the border region of Hubei and Hunan provinces and Chongqing municipality in south-central China, notably in Lichuan county in Hubei. Although the shortest of the redwoods, it can grow to in height. In 1941, the genus ''Metasequoia'' was reported by paleobotanist Shigeru Miki as a widely distributed extinct genus based on fossils, before attracting considerable attention a few years later when small populations were found alive in central China. Chinese Pond Heron
The Chinese pond heron (''Ardeola bacchus'') is an East Asian freshwater bird of the heron family, (Ardeidae). It is one of six species of birds known as "pond herons" (genus ''Ardeola''). It is parapatric (or nearly so) with the Indian pond heron (''A. grayii'') to the west and the Javan pond heron (''A. speciosa'') to the south, and these three are presumed to form a superspecies. As a group they are variously affiliated with the squacco heron (''A. ralloides'') or the Malagasy pond heron (''A. idae'').
